Armored soldiers survey a ruined city as a timeline graphic highlights October 6 and October 13.
Gears of War: E-Day launches worldwide on October 6, and ranked multiplayer won't be there on day one. Ranked arrives a week later. The Coalition's own season roadmap is clear about it. One wrinkle: the aggregator scores circulating with the news aren't as tidy as the headline "87" suggests.

The timeline, as the developer has laid it out

The Coalition's Xbox Wire post from studio head Mike Crump sets out three access points:

  • Premium Edition early access began October 1 at 8 a.m. Pacific (15:00 UTC), ahead of the worldwide launch on October 6 at 8 a.m. Pacific (15:00 UTC). The original shattered.io write-up guessed at a roughly 5 p.m. rollout. That does not match the developer's stated time.
  • The game is on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Steam. It is also available day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Game Pass members start on October 6, while the Premium Edition is the early-access route.
  • Insider Gaming, reporting on The Coalition's pre-launch blog post, says ranked multiplayer modes will be absent at early access on October 1 and at the full release on October 6.

The Coalition's own post says Versus Ranked will officially launch one week after launch on October 13, giving players crucial time to get up-to-speed with all our maps, modes and sandbox before jumping into competitive. That is the stated reason. It's about letting players learn the game first. The studio did not cite server stability, anti-cheat or matchmaking tuning. Those explanations are common across the industry, but nothing in the reporting ties them to this decision.

The gap between October 6 and October 13 is seven days. Counting from Premium early access on October 1, it is 12 days.

What you can play before Ranked

Don't read this as "multiplayer is missing." The official store copy describes two multiplayer pillars:

  • Horde Siege, the co-op PvE mode, with four classes (Assault, Marksman, Medic, Breacher).
  • Versus, a 4v4 PvP mode where players can lock in and climb the ranks in Ranked or jump into Social playlists, per the store description.

Only the ranked ladder is held back. Insider Gaming's take is that there is plenty of time to dig into the Campaign and Horde Siege without falling behind on a ranked ladder. The sources don't give a full list of playlists live in week one, so check in-game for what's available.

Weekly challenges also follow the schedule. The challenges Premium Edition owners get on October 1 are the same ones all players get at launch on October 6. They then refresh on October 13, the same day Ranked starts.

Online play, including Horde Siege and Versus, needs a Game Pass tier with online multiplayer. The store fine print says so for Game Pass routes.

About that "87" score

The shattered.io headline claims a Metacritic score of 87. The picture is messier:

  • Metacritic's listing for the Xbox Series X version shows 87 from 53 reviews, while the PC version sits at 84 from 27 reviews, according to Instant Gaming's news report. Those counts vary by snapshot, since review totals grow daily.
  • Windows Central's roundup reported 88 on Metacritic and 87 on OpenCritic earlier in the review cycle. That is a different figure on a different aggregator, so treat numbers quoted without a platform and date with some suspicion.
  • Every one of these scores comes from the campaign. Windows Central noted that the reviews only cover the single-player campaign, as the multiplayer modes were unavailable to test during the review period.

Put simply, the score tells you almost nothing about Ranked. Reviews are mixed on the campaign too: the Metacritic listing shows individual verdicts ranging from 100 down to a 50 from Gamekult. The aggregate is strong, but it is an aggregate.

What the reporting doesn't support

The original piece spun a lot of narrative from this schedule. The following claims have no support in the reporting I could check:

  • That Microsoft is "betting" on Game Pass retention or review momentum.
  • That Game Pass engagement will dip during the gap.
  • That the community reaction is broadly angry or that streamers are leaving. Insider Gaming only says some in the community have criticized it.
  • That the studio restructuring explains the schedule.

The game being "built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5" comes from the official store copy. That does not prove why Ranked is later.

Practical takeaways for PC players

  1. Pre-install is done and dusted. Pre-install opened September 29 on Xbox on PC and Steam, so the files should already be on your drive if you planned ahead.
  2. Shader compiling. The Coalition's site notes that Advanced Shader Delivery significantly reduces the time spent compiling shaders across different PC hardware configurations and benefits E-Day and other supported games in the Xbox PC app.
  3. Ranked players: use the week for Horde Siege, the campaign and Social Versus to learn the maps. The developer's own framing is that this is the point of the gap.
  4. Season 1 runs until December 1, with Halloween, 20 Years of Gears and Thanksgibbing events, so a week's wait for Ranked isn't the end of the season.

Bottom line

The verified story is a staggered launch, not a canceled mode. Ranked Versus is scheduled for October 13, and The Coalition's stated reason is player familiarity. The campaign reviews are strong. Whether that ranked ladder holds up on its first week of real load is something only October 13 will answer.
