A laptop and TV connect to a glowing cloud server in a cozy home office.
JioPC is easy to misread as "a PC in the cloud, for pocket change." It is a Linux cloud desktop that you rent by subscription and reach from a browser or a TV. That makes it a useful comparison point for anyone who follows Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop or other cloud PC services.

A laptop and TV connect to a glowing cloud server in a cozy home office. What Jio is actually selling

Reliance Jio has launched JioPC as a standalone cloud computing subscription. It lets users turn existing laptops and desktops into cloud-powered PCs without upgrading their hardware. The processor, memory and storage sit on Jio's servers. The service streams a virtual desktop from Jio's cloud infrastructure to your screen.

News9live reports that Jio is now pitching the service at students, schools, colleges and skill-development centres. The reporting does not name a specific school deal, a government programme or an institutional rollout date. This is best read as an education-flavoured push for a consumer service, not a classroom deployment.

The service is also not new. Jio launched it in July 2025 as a virtual desktop that could turn a regular TV into a computer. The set-top box version came first. The newer, standalone version is available regardless of your telecom or broadband provider.

Plans and pricing

The standard version offers 8GB of RAM and 500GB of cloud storage. JioPC Ultra offers 16GB of RAM and 1TB. Jio's own product page lists the standard tier at four CPUs and Ultra at eight CPUs.

ValidityJioPC (8GB / 500GB)JioPC Ultra (16GB / 1TB)
2 months₹1,000₹1,200
5 months₹2,000₹2,500
10+2 months₹4,000₹5,000

"10+2 months" most likely means 12 months of access for the price of 10. One outlet, TalkEsport, describes the plan that way. Jio's listing uses the 10+2 wording, so check the checkout page before you pay.

News9live also reports that eligible JioHome customers can redeem a ₹100 monthly voucher against their broadband bill, according to the company. I could not confirm that on Jio's own pages. Treat it as a perk for some JioHome customers, not a general discount.

Taxes are a separate question. The 2025 launch pricing was quoted "plus GST". The 2026 reports I reviewed do not say whether the new prices include GST, so check the final amount at checkout.

How it works

  • Browser access: You need a laptop or desktop with a supported browser, an internet connection and an active subscription.
  • Set-top box access: You need a Jio set-top box connected to a screen, a keyboard and mouse, Jio broadband and a subscription. Jio says the same desktop, files and settings appear whether you use the browser or the box.
  • Software: Both tiers run Ubuntu Linux. The desktop includes LibreOffice and web browsers. Microsoft 365 and Adobe Express are reached as web apps.

Ubuntu, not Windows

This is the point Windows users should hold onto. One analysis, from Privacy Test Lab, says both tiers run Ubuntu 22.04 with the Cinnamon desktop, a layout built to resemble Windows. It looks familiar, but it is not Windows.

Microsoft 365 here means the web versions in a browser. It does not mean native Word or Excel for Windows, and nothing reviewed shows classic Windows-only software running. Anyone with a Win32 line-of-business app, a Windows-specific lab tool or a Windows-only development environment should not assume it will work.

Compared with Windows 365, the same analysis says JioPC is far cheaper, though Windows 365 runs actual Windows. It also says JioPC is India-only, while Windows 365 is available globally. That price gap is not like-for-like. Windows 365 is aimed at managed enterprise use with identity and device management, and nothing reviewed suggests JioPC offers comparable admin tooling.

Practical caveats for students and schools

  • Internet is the computer. If the connection drops, you are disconnected. One report says work stays stored in the cloud, and you can reconnect within a 15-minute idle window. Jio's set-top box FAQ adds that if the box is switched off, the desktop runs for 15 minutes and then shuts down. Unsaved work is lost after that. Save often.
  • Performance is unproven. News9live itself says performance will depend on internet speed, connection stability and the applications used. I found no independent benchmarks.
  • Peripherals have been limited. At the 2025 launch, TechCrunch noted no support for external peripherals such as cameras and printers. Deccan Herald said video calling needed a webcam purchase. I could not confirm whether that has changed, so check before relying on it for online classes.
  • Setup claims are Jio's. Reports repeat the company's claim that activation takes under five minutes, with no data migration, hardware installation or downtime. That has not been independently tested.

Security and data claims

Jio says files are stored in the cloud with disaster recovery, protected by a Zero Trust access model and kept off the local device. That means a broken laptop or set-top box should not take your data with it.

These are vendor claims. The pages I reviewed give no independent audit results, retention terms or data-location details. For schools handling student records, those are the questions to ask before subscribing. "Zero Trust" describes an approach, not a guarantee against compromise or loss.

Related AI course

Jio separately promotes a free AI Classroom Foundation Course designed by Jio Institute, available in 12 languages. Jio's course page says learners who finish it on JioPC get a Jio Institute certification and access to advanced AI tools. It is a separate offering, not something bundled with every paid subscription.

Who might benefit

Cheap, remote RAM and storage could extend the life of an old laptop or let a TV double as a PC. A typical student might use it for documents, browsing, coding exercises and web-based tools. Talkesport's claim that it works on computers as old as eight years comes from Jio, and I could not verify it.

It is a poor fit for anyone who needs Windows applications, offline access or guaranteed low latency. A school replacing a lab of ageing machines should pilot it on the actual network and workloads first. The pricing is attractive, but it covers only the rented computing, and everything else depends on the connection.
