Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux now have a free next-gen update on Xbox Series X|S. It went live on October 29, 2026. Before you hit download, there are a few caveats the headline numbers leave out: which console gets 120fps, who qualifies for the free upgrade, and what happens to your saves.

A Metro game promotion shows two Redux titles and an Xbox controller in a ruined subway, advertising 4K and 120 FPS. What shipped

Xbox Wire carried the announcement, in a post by John Bloch, franchise executive producer at 4A Games. After installing the free update, players can choose between true 4K at 60fps and upscaled 4K at 120fps. The update also adds support for 4A TSR upscaling and antialiasing. The visual changes Xbox Wire lists are more detailed textures, a refined lighting and shadow system, richer environmental detail and better animation fidelity. Bloch says the team tuned all of this to preserve the look and feel of the originals.

The update also brings Xbox-specific platform features:

  • Handhelds: Xbox Ally and Ally X get full support and optimisation.
  • Play Anywhere: Xbox Play Anywhere support is included.
  • Controller: Impulse Triggers get full support, adding tactile feedback through the triggers.
  • Stability: The notes list fixes for a black screen when resuming from suspend, and for crashes and graphical corruption after Quick Resume. Save stability when resuming from suspend or Quick Resume, and when syncing cloud saves, was also improved on Series X|S.

The 120fps caveat

The marketing says "console," but the fine print is narrower. The Xbox patch notes list true 4K at 60fps as requiring supporting display hardware. They list upscaled 4K at 120fps for Xbox Series X, again with a supporting display. One outlet's reading is that the notes assign the 120fps option to Series X specifically and do not give it to Series S. If you own a Series S, don't assume you'll get 120fps. The same notes also list a power-optimised mode, and the publisher's announcement mentions spatial audio support on Xbox platforms.

Who gets it free, and the save warning

  • Eligibility: Deep Silver's player support says the free upgrade is available to most owners of either game and that some versions may not be compatible. The earlier press release was more generous and said "all existing owners." Check your own library entry rather than assuming.
  • Saves: Pure Xbox warns that previous saves won't carry through to the next-gen version, so a new game is required. The publisher's own note is scoped to the Microsoft Store version only, where saves will not carry over. Treat console save carry-over as unconfirmed and check before you commit to a new playthrough. The published notes say all chapters are unlocked, so you can jump in wherever you like.
  • Finding it: Pure Xbox says you can press Y on the Xbox dashboard, search "Metro Redux," and open the Xbox Series X|S version of each game.

Windows and PC angle

The Windows Store version didn't arrive with the PC release. Steam, Epic and GOG got the update on October 22, and the Windows Store version arrived on October 29 with the consoles. The same patch notes include a power-optimised mode for Xbox Ally, Ally X and the Microsoft Store version. That makes this an example of Xbox Play Anywhere and handheld support reaching older catalogue games. Play Anywhere's entitlement and cloud-save behaviour for every purchase type isn't spelled out in the sources I found.

What this isn't

Deep Silver describes this as native Series X|S support with performance and visual upgrades. The publisher's FAQ is blunt that it is not a remaster or remake. The games are not ported to the current 4A Engine, and there is no ray tracing. Expect a tidy modernisation, not a rebuilt game.

Price and context

Xbox Wire's store listing showed the Metro Redux Bundle at $4.49, down from $29.99. That is a time-sensitive listing price, separate from the free update. Bloch frames the refresh as a lead-in to Metro 2039, which launches on February 4, 2027.

Bottom line

  • Series X owners get the full 4K/60 and upscaled 4K/120 menu, given a compatible display.
  • Series S owners get native support and 4K/60, but the 120fps mode is not listed for them.
  • Check eligibility on your account, and don't assume saves will carry over, especially on the Microsoft Store version.
