Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are getting a free current-generation update in October, more than a decade after the Redux versions first came out. Publisher Deep Silver and developer 4A Games call it the "METRO Redux Next-Gen Update." It arrives on PC first, then on consoles a week later. For Windows and Xbox players, the details that matter are the Windows Store eligibility, Xbox Play Anywhere, Xbox Handheld support and DLSS on PC.

The three headlines covering this story are all describing one announcement. VGChartz focuses on the October 29 console date. Pure Xbox counts two games getting free Xbox Series X|S upgrades. TwistedVoxel uses the broader October 2026 window. All three are correct, but the dates differ by platform.

The dates

PlatformRelease dateWho gets it free
PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store)October 22, 2026Existing owners
Xbox Series X|SOctober 29, 2026Existing owners
PlayStation 5 / PS5 ProOctober 29, 2026Existing owners

The official press release, carried by Games Press, puts the update on PC on 22 October, followed by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 29 October. TwistedVoxel says it is available at no additional cost to existing owners of both games on Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Summary: PC players get it on October 22. Xbox and PlayStation players get it on October 29. Both Redux games are included, and the update costs nothing for existing owners.

What the update is not

4A Games says plainly that this is not a remake. Gematsu reproduces the studio's statement: "This is not a full remaster or remake—the original Metro Redux experience and aesthetic has been preserved". The studio describes the work as careful improvements for current hardware.

Changes on every platform:

  • 4K textures: All platforms will include support for 4K textures
  • Better presentation: improved animation fidelity, higher-quality audio and richer environmental detail
  • Fixes: a range of community led bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements

If you were hoping for a full rebuild like Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, this isn't that. It's closer to a well-done restoration than a renovation.

Xbox Series X|S features

Gematsu reports that the update adds native support for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S, alongside platform-specific enhancements such as PSSR support on PlayStation 5 Pro, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing support on Xbox Series X, and Spatial Audio support on Xbox platforms.

What Xbox owners get, according to Deep Silver's announcement:

  • Performance targets: native 4K at 60fps, or upscaled 4K at 120fps with a compatible TV or monitor, plus better lighting, shadows and particle effects
  • TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing: listed for Xbox Series X specifically
  • Spatial audio across Xbox platforms
  • Impulse Trigger support on Xbox controllers
  • Power Optimized Mode on Xbox
  • Hardware tessellation and displacement at runtime on consoles

Deep Silver lists those 4K/60 and 4K/120 figures for consoles in general. It does not say what each model achieves, and Series S is the obvious question. TSR is named only for Series X, so Series S owners should wait for the patch notes before assuming they get identical modes.

Summary: Xbox Series X|S versions run natively on current hardware with high-frame-rate options. Model-by-model details haven't been published yet.

PC: DLSS, spatial audio, and possibly uncapped frame rates

On Windows, the confirmed features are smaller in number but useful. TwistedVoxel reports that on PC, the update adds DLSS and spatial audio, alongside further community bug fixes and requested quality-of-life improvements.

The sources disagree on one point. The version of the press release published by Playday says players can experience 4K resolution with uncapped frame rates on PC, and FullCleared and Insider Gaming report the same thing. Deep Silver's own blog post mentions only DLSS, spatial audio and bug fixes for PC. Read "uncapped" as a promise from the press release until the patch notes say what it actually means.

Still unannounced for PC:

  • Which DLSS version is used
  • Updated minimum or recommended system requirements
  • Whether AMD FSR or Intel XeSS will be included (only DLSS has been named)

Summary: PC owners on Steam, Epic and the Windows Store get the update first, on October 22. DLSS and spatial audio are confirmed. The uncapped frame rate claim comes from the press release.

Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Handheld

For people who play on both Windows and Xbox, this is the most interesting part. The update adds Xbox Handheld and Xbox Play Anywhere support. TrueAchievements notes this is interesting as there are already native Xbox PC versions of both Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux.

The likely benefit, and this is our reading rather than anything 4A has confirmed, is that one purchase would cover console and PC with shared saves and achievements, which is how Play Anywhere normally works. That would make it easy to carry a Ranger Hardcore run from the living room to a Windows handheld. The studio hasn't explained how existing separate PC and console purchases will be handled under Play Anywhere, so don't assume your old Windows Store copy and your console copy will merge until the patch notes or store pages say so.

Who qualifies

The free upgrade sounds simple, but eligibility has one open question.

Deep Silver's eligibility line names Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Gematsu reports that users who own the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions will also receive a free upgrade, and VGChartz says the same. Those two reports disagree with each other on wording. Pure Xbox adds that there has been no clarification on whether physical copies count.

Steps to take now:

  • Find your copy. Check whether you own Metro 2033 Redux, Metro: Last Light Redux or the Metro Redux bundle, and on which store.
  • If you own an Xbox One version, check the Microsoft Store listing on or after October 29 for a Series X|S version. Gematsu's report suggests last-gen owners are covered, but look for the official upgrade path before buying anything.
  • If you're on PC, update Steam, Epic or the Xbox app on October 22 and leave enough disk space. 4K textures usually mean a bigger download, although no file size has been announced.
  • If you have a physical disc, wait for official confirmation before assuming it qualifies.
  • Read the patch notes on launch day. Deep Silver says full technical notes will be published when the update ships.

Switch isn't on the list. Gematsu notes that both titles were previously released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC, but the next-gen update names only PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why now

The timing is promotional, and that's fine. Beebom notes the update should keep players busy until the next entry arrives on February 4, 2027. Deep Silver paired the announcement with a sales milestone: FullCleared reports that the Metro franchise has now passed 50 million copies sold worldwide, 16 years after Metro 2033 first launched. That figure comes from the publisher.

4A has done this before. In the Games Press release, the studio describes the free update as following what we did with METRO Exodus. That refers to Exodus's free Enhanced Edition upgrade, which rebuilt the game around ray tracing. This time the scope is clearly smaller, but 4A is again giving the upgrade away rather than selling a remaster at full price.

The bottom line

Two well-regarded shooters are getting 4K textures, native Series X|S support, Play Anywhere, Xbox Handheld support and DLSS on PC, for free. That's good news. It isn't a remake, and the console modes for each model, the PC hardware requirements and the upgrade paths for older platforms won't be confirmed until the patch notes arrive on October 22 and 29.

Update: Eurogamer lists GOG owners as eligible for the free upgrade (October 3, 2026)

GOG owners will reportedly also qualify for the free Metro Redux next-gen update, according to Eurogamer’s October 3 report. The outlet explicitly includes GOG alongside Steam, Epic Games Store and Windows Store in its list of eligible PC storefronts. That expands the reported eligibility beyond the storefront list covered above; the earlier omission should not be read as confirmation that GOG copies are excluded.

For Windows players who bought either Redux title through GOG, the practical implication is that they may not need to purchase another copy to receive the upgrade. Eurogamer places those owners within the PC rollout scheduled for October 22, rather than the later console release.

This additional storefront eligibility remains attributed to Eurogamer, not a newly supplied first-party clarification. Its report does not explain how GOG will distribute the updated builds or whether any account or installation steps will be required. GOG owners should therefore check their library and the launch-day patch notes before buying a replacement copy elsewhere.

Update: Additional details (October 14, 2026)

Explosion Network reports that the PS5 version will support DualSense adaptive triggers. The existing announcement coverage named PS5 Pro PSSR but had not specified this controller feature.

The report does not provide further detail on trigger behavior or whether haptic feedback is also included.
