The entry is short. It's still worth attention from Teams admins, compliance teams and developers building on Microsoft 365 Copilot. Right now, most Copilot and agent work with meeting transcripts happens after the meeting ends. This item points to agents that can read the transcript while people are still talking.
What the roadmap entry says
| Field | Roadmap value |
|---|---|
| Roadmap ID | 570651 |
| Status | In development |
| Products | Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft 365), Work IQ |
| Platform | Web |
| Release rings | Preview, General Availability |
| Preview estimate | September 2026 |
| General availability estimate | November 2026 |
| Cloud instance | Worldwide (Standard Multi-Tenant) |
The dates don't line up neatly. The listed preview month, September 2026, has already passed, yet the item still says "In development." The roadmap entry alone doesn't show whether a preview has started. Microsoft's own terms say the roadmap gives estimated release dates, that everything is subject to change, and that entries can be removed when a feature ships, is cancelled or is postponed. Treat November 2026 as a target, not a promise.
Section summary: The roadmap promises real-time transcript access for apps and agents, on the web, in the worldwide commercial cloud, with a target of general availability in November 2026. Nothing has shipped yet.
Where this fits in Work IQ
Work IQ is Microsoft's name for the intelligence layer behind Copilot and agents. In a Tech Community deep dive, Microsoft said it keeps adding skills that tailor Copilot for specific tasks, and it named "access meeting details and transcripts" as one example. The same post says developers can also integrate Work IQ into their own apps and agents. That's the audience the new item is aimed at.
So agents can already reach transcripts. What 570651 adds is timing. Agents currently work from transcripts of meetings that have finished. This item says they'll get them in real time. Developers who've already used Work IQ's Teams tools describe them as able to access Teams messages, chats, channels, and meeting transcripts. In those cases the transcript is pulled after the fact, for example by asking what was decided in the last planning meeting.
Microsoft's Inside Track team, which writes up the company's own internal deployments, describes transcripts as signals that help turn live discussions into durable knowledge that can inform future work and agent reasoning. Real-time access would let that same material be used while the meeting is still going.
Section summary: Work IQ already gives agents access to transcripts after meetings. The roadmap item would make them available during the meeting.
What isn't known yet
The entry leaves out most of what an IT department needs before it can plan a deployment:
- No API or interface is named. The Work IQ API is described elsewhere as working through agent-to-agent, Model Context Protocol and REST interfaces. The transcript item doesn't say which of these, if any, it will use.
- No permission model. It doesn't say whether organizers, participants or admins have to opt in, or whether an agent must be authorized for a particular meeting.
- No licensing details. It doesn't say whether this needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, an E7-class suite or something else.
- No definition of "real time." There's no latency figure. The entry describes access to Teams transcripts. It doesn't describe a new transcription engine.
- Narrow scope. The only platform listed is Web, and the only cloud is Worldwide (Standard Multi-Tenant). Don't assume desktop, mobile, Teams Rooms, GCC or sovereign clouds are covered.
The permission question matters because of how Work IQ is set up today. A third-party hands-on guide to the Work IQ API, published by A Guide to Cloud, lists admin consent for permissions that include OnlineMeetingTranscript.Read.All, a tenant-wide right to read online meeting transcripts. Microsoft hasn't said whether the real-time feature will use the same permission. If it does, a one-click consent screen would let an agent read transcripts of live meetings, not just finished ones. That's a much bigger grant.
Section summary: Microsoft hasn't published the interface, permission model, licensing, latency or support beyond the web client.
Compliance and governance
Microsoft has said some things about how Work IQ handles sensitive meetings. Inside Track says meeting labels determine the classification of all downstream artifacts—including recordings, transcripts, and notes. If that also applies to live transcript streams, a confidential label on a meeting should follow its transcript into any agent that reads it.
That "if" is the main thing to confirm. These open questions are my analysis, not Microsoft's statements:
- Consent and notice. Do participants know an agent is reading the transcript live, or only that transcription is turned on?
- Data handling. Is anything an agent pulls during the meeting subject to the same retention, eDiscovery and Purview policies as the final transcript?
- Third-party apps. "Applications and agents" may include software outside Microsoft. Where does live meeting content go once it leaves Teams?
- Workplace rules. In some regions, live processing of what employees say could involve works councils or monitoring laws.
None of these should rule the feature out. A meeting assistant that answers questions, flags action items or pulls up a relevant document mid-call is exactly the kind of help Microsoft says it wants to deliver. Those are possible uses, though. Microsoft hasn't announced any of them.
What to do now
- Review your transcription policies. Real-time access depends on transcripts existing, so your current Teams transcription settings decide which meetings could be included.
- Check existing consent grants. Look in Entra ID for apps that already hold transcript-reading permissions.
- Confirm sensitivity labels are applied to meetings, since Microsoft says those labels flow down to transcripts.
- Watch for documentation on permissions, prerequisites, interfaces and licensing before you build a pilot around November.
Bottom line: Roadmap item 570651 would let Work IQ agents use meeting transcripts while the meeting is happening. That's useful, and it raises governance questions the roadmap entry doesn't answer yet. Get your policies in order before the feature arrives.
