Minisforum’s N5 MAX-P495 is being presented as an unusual blend of network-attached storage and high-end local compute: an AI Agent NAS with support for as much as 200TB of local storage, driven by AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 processor. The announcement is noteworthy not simply because of its headline storage figure, but because it puts a 16-core mobile-class AMD platform with substantial graphics and AI capability into a category normally judged first on drive bays, networking, expansion, reliability, and software support.

That promise needs careful interpretation. Minisforum has confirmed the processor, the 200TB ceiling, memory and graphics-memory figures, and a platform-wide AI performance rating. It has not yet published the detailed N5 MAX-P495 chassis, port, storage-layout, network, pricing, or availability information that will determine whether it is a compelling NAS for Windows households and small businesses—or chiefly a powerful compact computer with room for a great deal of storage.

Revealed at IFA with a workstation sibling​

Minisforum unveiled the N5 MAX-P495 alongside the MS-S1 MAX-P495 workstation at IFA Berlin on September 4, 2026. Both systems use AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495, a processor previously known by the codename Gorgon Halo.

The processor specification is substantial on paper. AMD lists 16 CPU cores and 32 threads, Radeon 8065S integrated graphics with 40 graphics cores, and LPDDR5x memory support at up to 8,533 MT/s. Minisforum’s announcement for the P495 systems cites up to 192GB of memory and up to 160GB of graphics memory.

One correction is important for prospective buyers comparing early reports: the supported memory maximum is 192GB, not 196GB. That 192GB figure appears in both AMD’s processor specifications and Minisforum’s announcement. A four-gigabyte discrepancy may sound minor, but at this end of the market it matters: memory capacity can be central to deciding whether a system has enough headroom for file services, virtualized workloads, large local data sets, or graphics-accelerated tasks.

The N5 MAX-P495’s stated 200TB local-storage support is the other headline specification. For organizations trying to keep large media libraries, project assets, backup archives, or data sets on premises, that is a meaningful capacity target. Yet capacity is only one dimension of a NAS purchase. Until Minisforum documents precisely how that total is achieved, buyers cannot assume a particular number of hard-drive bays, M.2 slots, drive interfaces, redundancy options, or usable capacity after any chosen data-protection arrangement.

131 TOPS is not the same as 55 NPU TOPS​

Minisforum quotes up to 131 TOPS of total AI compute for its announced P495 systems. AMD, meanwhile, specifies up to 55 NPU TOPS for the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 itself. These are not competing memory or performance specifications, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.

The 131-TOPS number is a total platform-oriented AI figure. The 55-TOPS number refers specifically to the processor’s neural processing unit. The gap matters because a total AI rating can encompass contribution from more than one part of the processor, while an NPU rating describes a narrower accelerator resource. Stating that the N5 MAX-P495 has “131 NPU TOPS” would therefore overstate what AMD specifies for the NPU.

For Windows users, this distinction is practical rather than semantic. Software may target different compute resources depending on its design, its drivers, its operating-system support, and the workload. A promotional total tells buyers that the platform is intended for AI-related work, but it does not establish how a particular application will perform, whether it will use the NPU, GPU, CPU, or a combination, or how much of the device will remain available for storage and networking duties at the same time.

The up-to-160GB graphics-memory figure also signals Minisforum’s focus on workloads beyond conventional NAS tasks. It could be significant where graphics-accelerated work benefits from access to large memory allocations. But the announcement does not provide workload tests, sustained-performance measurements, power figures, or software configuration details. It is consequently too early to translate the specification into claims about model sizes, inference speed, multi-user performance, or an advantage over the existing N5 Max.

A 200TB claim without the topology behind it​

The N5 MAX-P495’s 200TB maximum is confirmed. Its exact storage topology is not.

This distinction is especially important because Minisforum already sells an earlier N5 Max based on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395. That existing product is described as having five hard-drive bays and five SSD bays, with up to 200TB capacity. It is tempting to presume that the P495 version uses the same arrangement, or a closely related chassis. The reviewed N5 MAX-P495 announcement, however, does not confirm that presumption.

As a result, the following details should remain open questions rather than assumed specifications for the new model:

  • The number of hard-drive bays and M.2 SSD slots.
  • Which drive interfaces are present and how bandwidth is distributed between them.
  • Whether a system drive consumes one of the advertised storage positions.
  • The available expansion options and PCIe lane allocation.
  • The networking controllers and port speeds.
  • The external I/O selection.
  • The operating environment, bundled software, and data-management features.

For a Windows-centered setup, those omissions are consequential. A large local storage number alone does not reveal how straightforward it will be to integrate the appliance with Windows PCs, how it will present shared files, what backup workflows it supports, or which management tools are required. It also does not reveal how easily a user could attach fast external storage, add networking capacity, or connect peripherals needed for a local-compute workflow.

Prospective buyers should therefore treat 200TB as a capacity ceiling, not a complete deployment plan. Before committing, Windows users should seek published details on storage configuration, data protection, network connectivity, file-sharing compatibility, drive support, upgrade access, and recovery procedures. Businesses should additionally determine how the device fits their authentication, backup, monitoring, and support requirements. None of these are safely inferred from the processor or the capacity headline.

Why the processor changes the conversation​

A traditional NAS discussion often begins with storage bays, RAID choices, network performance, and the vendor’s operating system. The N5 MAX-P495 shifts the emphasis toward compute as well. AMD’s 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 and Radeon 8065S graphics are far more detailed processing credentials than a basic storage appliance normally advertises.

That can make sense for a device intended to keep both data and compute local. Co-locating storage with processing could reduce the need to move large files across a network for some workflows. It may also appeal to users who want one compact system rather than a separate NAS and workstation. This is an inference from the product positioning and specifications, not a demonstrated performance result: Minisforum has not published independent benchmark evidence showing how the N5 MAX-P495 performs in real NAS duties while AI or graphics-intensive tasks are active.

There are trade-offs to consider. Combining roles can simplify a small deployment, but it can also create contention. A machine performing intensive compute work may face different demands than one serving files, handling backups, or maintaining storage arrays. Without published thermal, power, network, and sustained-load testing, it is not possible to judge how well the N5 MAX-P495 balances those jobs.

The absence of comparative data also means the P495 should not yet be described as a modest—or dramatic—performance uplift over the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 N5 Max. The older and newer processors differ by model, but the supplied information does not establish a measured before-and-after result in this NAS design.

Existing N5 Max pricing is not a price forecast​

Minisforum has not supplied a price, regional configuration list, preorder date, or retail availability date for the N5 MAX-P495 in the reviewed announcement. That makes any claim that it will ship soon, or that it will cost a particular amount, speculative.

There is one useful reference point, but it must be kept separate from the new product. At the time the existing product listing was reviewed, Minisforum showed a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 N5 Max configuration with 64GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 128GB operating-system drive at a $2,399 sale price, against a $2,999 regular price. That listing establishes neither the P495’s price nor its eventual memory, storage, or chassis configurations.

The distinction matters because the announced P495 platform has a higher stated memory ceiling and a different processor, while its actual storage layout and I/O remain unpublished. A direct price comparison would assume too much about the final product. Buyers should avoid using the older model’s listed price as a budget estimate for the N5 MAX-P495 until Minisforum publishes a specific configuration and regional pricing.

What is confirmed—and what buyers should wait to learn​

The confirmed picture is clear enough to explain why the N5 MAX-P495 has attracted attention. Minisforum has announced an AI Agent NAS using AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495, with up to 200TB of local storage, up to 192GB of 8,533 MT/s memory, up to 160GB of graphics memory, and up to 131 TOPS of total AI compute. AMD specifies the processor as a 16-core, 32-thread part with Radeon 8065S graphics and up to 55 NPU TOPS.

The less certain picture is just as important. There is no reviewed detailed product sheet confirming the exact drive-bay count, SSD-slot count, ports, networking, expansion, system software, dimensions, power envelope, or availability. Nor are there independent benchmarks that validate real-world NAS, graphics, or AI behavior in the final enclosure.

That leaves the N5 MAX-P495 as a promising but incomplete announcement. It may eventually appeal to Windows power users who want dense local storage and significant on-device compute in one machine. For now, the responsible conclusion is narrower: Minisforum has confirmed a high-capacity, AMD-powered AI NAS concept with unusually strong stated compute specifications, but the deployment details that decide its real value have yet to be published.
