What Xbox Mythic Achievements actually are
Game Rant frames the difference as Microsoft's recently introduced achievement system giving Xbox completionists an extra reward that PlayStation currently lacks. The feature behind it is Mythic Achievements, which Microsoft first put in front of Xbox Insiders on September 29, 2026.
Microsoft's rules, as published in its Xbox Wire post, are fairly simple:
- You earn a Mythic when you complete all original achievements for a game.
- Achievements added later through DLC or updates aren't required.
- Once earned, Mythic status is permanent.
- Eligible games you completed in the past, including Xbox 360 titles, were retroactively given Mythics.
- A progress bar at the top of each game's achievement list shows how close you are. Later achievements are tagged "add-on", so you can see what counts toward Mythic.
The feature is no longer Insider-only. TrueAchievements reported on October 29 that a console system update had brought Mythic achievements to all Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One users. It also noted that some games might not display correctly from day one while the feature keeps getting updated.
The Modern Warfare 4 wrinkle
Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23 and runs inside the Call of Duty HQ hub rather than as a separate app. By Microsoft's own rules, that should be a problem for Mythic. MW4's achievements are technically categorized as an add-on within Call of Duty HQ, while Xbox normally bases Mythic status only on a game's original achievement list.
Player reports say it works anyway. Game Rant, citing prominent achievement hunter Stallion83, says completing all 18 MW4 achievements unlocks the Mythic reward for the shared Call of Duty application. Those reports indicate that the full set of campaign achievements currently satisfies the launcher's Mythic requirement.
Two caveats apply:
- This is observed behavior, not documented policy. Neither Microsoft nor Activision has explained the unlock condition. It could change, or it could be a quirk of how the Call of Duty entry is set up.
- It's unclear which entry the Mythic attaches to. Game Rant calls it the shared Call of Duty application. A separate trophy guide from KeenGamer says MW4's list is registered as an additional set under Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. A reply quoted in Push Square's comments also suggested the Mythic would attach to the 2022 game. Those descriptions may all be the same thing seen from different angles, but players chasing one particular profile entry should check how it appears on their own console.
Why PS5 has no Platinum
On PlayStation 5, MW4 has 18 trophies. They are eight Gold and ten Silver, with no Platinum. Push Square's report, which came from the PlayStation Game Size account, said the list covered the campaign only. It had no trophies for multiplayer or DMZ at that point.
The reason is structural. Modern Warfare 4 runs inside the Call of Duty HQ hub instead of as its own app, so the console treats its campaign trophies as an add-on list under HQ, and add-on lists don't get a Platinum. One explainer adds that a PS5 game can only carry one Platinum across all of its trophy lists. Add-on lists therefore launch without one.
Why this keeps happening to Call of Duty on PS5
Comicbook.com argues that the PS4 versions of recent Call of Duty games had given PS5 owners a way to get a launch-day Platinum. Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty to skip PS4, so that route is gone. That fits the facts, but treat it as reasoned context, not a confirmed explanation from Sony or Activision.
Comicbook.com also speculates that a Platinum could arrive later, in a future standalone release. That is a prediction. As of November 3, Activision hadn't said whether MW4 will get its own PS5 trophy list and Platinum.
Xbox's system sidesteps the same problem. A Mythic is a system-level completion marker, where a Platinum is something each developer has to configure. The same Push Square comment thread made that point, with one commenter saying a Mythic will not add to Gamerscore. In the commenter's view, a Platinum at least raises your Trophy Level.
What it takes to earn the 18 achievements
The list is short compared with some Call of Duty completion marathons. TrueAchievements estimates 15 to 20 hours, based on the modal time reported by 57 members who had finished the add-on. That is a community estimate, not a guarantee.
Several details from the trophy guides matter if you're planning a run:
- All 18 unlocks are tied to the campaign. They cover mission objectives, combat challenges, collectibles and difficulty-specific completions.
- Earning every trophy requires at least two campaign playthroughs, because Realism difficulty is locked until you finish the story once.
- Four unlocks require Hardened, Veteran or Realism difficulty.
- On Xbox, the same 18 unlocks make up a full 1,000 Gamerscore list.
- Hidden unlocks show as "Secret Achievement" in the list. Selecting one and choosing Reveal shows its requirement.
How much does this "advantage" matter?
Not much, and Game Rant says so itself. It concedes the gap may not affect the game, and calls it "one small reason" to prefer the Xbox version. It's a bragging-rights difference for people who care about completion badges.
For everyone else, the practical points are short:
- If you collect Mythics, MW4's campaign looks like a manageable one to add. Verify that it registers on your profile, because the behavior is unofficial.
- If you collect PlayStation Platinums, MW4 gives you a completed trophy list but no Platinum for now.
- If you play on PC or just for the campaign, none of this affects you.
The more interesting question is whether Microsoft will formalize how Mythic treats add-on lists in launcher-style games. Call of Duty HQ is the obvious test case. Any change would probably show up first in how the achievement list tags "add-on" content. Until Microsoft or Activision comments, the Xbox side of this is observed behavior, and the PS5 side is a structural limit of how the game is packaged.
