An MSI Claw handheld displays a game graphics comparison beside a driver update notice and a December 2026 calendar.
MSI says its AMD-based Claw A8 handheld will get official FSR Upscaling 4.1 support next month, but the feature isn't in any driver yet. VideoCardz reports that the update is targeted for December 2026 and depends on successful validation. OC3D describes the same plan, calling MSI's approach "more cautious," with a December 2026 release subject to stability testing and validation. Both outlets cite MSI's own forum announcement as their source. The MSI post itself wasn't readable when the sources were checked, so this article relies on their accounts.

An MSI Claw handheld displays a game graphics comparison beside a driver update notice and a December 2026 calendar. What MSI actually promised

The device is the MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM. VideoCardz says it is powered by AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme with Radeon 890M integrated graphics. OC3D adds that the 890M uses AMD's RDNA 3.5 architecture. It also says this model uses a similar chip to ASUS's ROG Xbox Ally X and X20, and that ASUS has already released a preview update enabling FSR 4.1.

The reports establish four things:

  • MSI plans to deliver FSR 4.1 through its own manufacturer-provided graphics driver.
  • The target is December 2026. That is a target, not a promise of a specific day.
  • No exact release date, final driver version or test results have been published.
  • The reports cover the AMD Claw A8 BZ2EM only. They don't say whether Intel-based Claw models are affected.

The driver you can install today

The announcement came with a separate, released driver. MSI released AMD graphics driver 32.0.32016.5 for the Claw A8 BZ2EM alongside the announcement. VideoCardz lists fixes for incorrect shadow rendering, lighting glitches, FSR upscaling artifacts, smoke and particle problems, and black-square artifacts in gameplay. You can install it through MSI Center M or download it from MSI's support website.

The fix for "FSR upscaling artifacts" refers to existing FSR behavior. It doesn't mean FSR 4.1 has arrived. VideoCardz states that the current driver does not yet include FSR 4.1, and that MSI expects to ship it in December if testing succeeds.

If you own an A8, installing 32.0.32016.5 is worthwhile if you've seen those rendering glitches. Don't expect it to change your upscaling quality.

Why handheld owners wait

AMD announced the FSR 4.1 expansion on October 20, 2026. AMD's announcement lists Ryzen Z2 Extreme, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 A among the newly supported hardware. The same announcement included a caveat: AMD says feature availability and release timing may vary by device, and it tells owners to check with their handheld maker for official timelines.

AMD also says it built a more efficient, streamlined version of FSR 4.1 for this class of hardware. It is meant for handhelds and mainstream laptops. OC3D notes that FSR 4.1 on AMD APUs uses a lighter model than the full desktop one. That is the vendor's description, not a measured result.

The delay comes down to how drivers are delivered. OC3D says AMD doesn't support Ryzen Z-series handhelds through its Adrenalin drivers, so device makers must distribute their own drivers built on AMD's. That gap explains why ASUS's preview arrived first and MSI's driver is still weeks away. Identical silicon doesn't guarantee identical timing.

Official support versus modified drivers

VideoCardz reads the announcement as confirmation that A8 owners will get an official implementation instead of needing modified drivers. That is a reasonable reading, and it matters to anyone tempted to hunt for unofficial driver packages. I wouldn't call it a guarantee until the driver ships.

What to expect, and what isn't known

OC3D says the future driver should enable FSR 4.1 in compatible games when AMD's "FSR Upgrade" feature is enabled. Treat that as OC3D's expectation, not a confirmed MSI procedure. The sources don't say:

  • which games will be supported;
  • whether the option will be global or per-game;
  • what frame-rate or image-quality gains the A8 will see.

OC3D calls the update a "major graphical boost," but neither report includes A8 benchmarks. AMD's claims about image-quality gains over FSR 3.1 are platform-level statements, not A8 test data.

One third-party setup guide says FSR 4.1 is enabled per game rather than system-wide. I couldn't verify that against MSI or AMD documentation for this device. Check MSI's release notes when the driver lands.

Practical advice for A8 owners

  1. Install driver 32.0.32016.5 through MSI Center M or MSI's support page if you want the rendering fixes now.
  2. Don't expect FSR 4.1 options from that driver.
  3. Watch MSI Center M and MSI's support pages in December for the FSR 4.1 driver.
  4. When it arrives, read the release notes before updating. They should say how the feature is enabled and which games it covers.
  5. Expect slippage. MSI has tied the date to validation.

Analysis

MSI's caution has a cost. ASUS shipped a preview and MSI didn't. For a handheld with a roughly 8-inch 1920x1200 screen, a lighter ML upscaler could meaningfully improve image quality at low internal resolutions. That's my inference from AMD's description. It is not a measured claim.

The upside of waiting is that a validated driver is less likely to break existing games. The downside is the usual one for handheld owners: you depend on the device maker's schedule rather than AMD's.

In short, MSI has publicly committed to an official FSR 4.1 driver for the Claw A8 BZ2EM, aimed at December. The driver available today carries bug fixes but not the feature.
