ASCII.jp’s November 5 report emphasizes the flagship processor-and-GPU combination, while its November 6 follow-up highlights the display and both configurations. Its English editions are marked as AI-translated, with the Japanese originals identified as authoritative. The announcement concerns Japan; it does not establish US availability or US pricing.
Two GPU choices, the same substantial foundation
The Japanese launch coverage identifies these configurations:
| Specification | Raider-A18-HX-A9WJG-0163JP | Raider-A18-HX-A9WIG-0173JP |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Ryzen 9 9955HX3D | Ryzen 9 9955HX3D |
| Graphics | RTX 5090 Laptop GPU | RTX 5080 Laptop GPU |
| Dedicated graphics memory | 24GB GDDR7 | 16GB GDDR7 |
| Maximum reported GPU power | 175W | 175W |
| System memory | 64GB DDR5 | 64GB DDR5 |
| Storage | 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD | 2TB NVMe M.2 SSD |
Hermitage Akihabara corroborates the shared memory and storage specifications and reports open pricing for both models, without a retail price. Consequently, the announcement does not yet support a value-for-money verdict between them.
The CPU offers 16 cores, 32 threads, 3D V-Cache and a maximum clock speed of 5.4GHz. ASCII positions the machines for gaming, video editing, 3D graphics and local AI, but its coverage supplies no application benchmarks or measured performance difference between the GPUs. The clearly established distinction is the graphics configuration—not a proven frame-rate advantage of any particular size.
The display deserves equal billing
MSI’s product page confirms the 4K+ Mini LED specification, 120Hz refresh rate, DisplayHDR 1000 support and a claimed color gamut equivalent to DCI-P3. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of brightness, color accuracy or response time.
The useful distinction is between display capability and delivered performance. A 120Hz panel is not evidence that a demanding game will run at 120 frames per second at native resolution. Likewise, wide-gamut specifications alone are not a substitute for measured color accuracy when buying for professional creative work.
The important power caveat
MSI advertises a maximum combined CPU-and-GPU power figure of 260W for the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D/RTX 5090 configuration. Its conditions matter: the supplied dedicated AC adapter must be connected, MSI Center must be set to Extreme, and adequate cooling must be available. That ceiling should not automatically be assigned to the RTX 5080 variant.
USB-C power support also comes with boundaries. MSI explicitly warns that USB Power Delivery can restrict system performance, charging may not occur under some startup loads, and compatibility with every USB-PD device is not guaranteed.
Its charging guidance specifies 140W while operating or asleep, and 140W or 65W while hibernating or powered off. In practical terms, USB-C charging is a conditional convenience—not a promise that a smaller charger will replace the dedicated adapter for full-performance gaming.
Windows, connectivity and carrying the thing
PC Watch reports Windows 11 Pro on these Japanese configurations, alongside two USB4 ports, three USB-A ports, HDMI, an SD-card slot, 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. It lists dimensions of 404 × 307.5 × 32.05mm and a weight of approximately 3.6kg. This is desktop-replacement territory: transportable, certainly, but hardly a machine that disappears into a shoulder bag.
Buyers should still check the exact product number. MSI’s broader family page lists both Windows 11 Home and Pro and warns that configurations vary by model.
The launch coverage quotes up to four hours of video playback, not four hours of gaming or GPU-heavy production work. That distinction belongs near the specifications, not buried beneath the RGB lighting.
The takeaway: these two Raiders offer a concrete choice between 24GB and 16GB graphics configurations around the same large-screen platform. Before choosing, the meaningful missing pieces are retail pricing and workload-specific testing. The specification sheet establishes an ambitious Windows PC; it does not, by itself, settle which version is the better purchase.
