What was announced
Embers said during the ID@Xbox Showcase that the game will release this winter on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox for PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The announcement came with a premiere of the Official Release Window Trailer.
The window is a season, not a date. The listing says only "Winter 2026". Neither the developer nor Microsoft has given a day or month, a price, or a Game Pass plan. I won't guess at any of them.
Platforms: the sources differ
Microsoft's Xbox Wire recap confirms the Xbox side. It says the game is coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Play Anywhere this winter. That recap also says many of the featured ID@Xbox games will support Play Anywhere at launch, so you can play across console and PC at no additional cost. The general statement doesn't say every showcase title qualifies, but Xbox Wire does list Paper Shredder specifically.
The outlets don't describe the PC storefronts the same way:
| Source | Platforms named |
|---|---|
| Embers press release | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox for PC, Steam, Epic Games Store |
| Xbox Wire recap | Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Play Anywhere |
| Gematsu | Xbox Series and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store |
Gematsu also notes that the Xbox Series and Microsoft Store versions are newly announced. The Epic Games Store appears only in Embers' own release. Treat the final PC storefront list as unconfirmed until the studio publishes store pages. Xbox Play Anywhere is the most solidly confirmed Windows-relevant detail.
For Windows users, the Xbox-on-PC and Play Anywhere listing is the useful part. It suggests one purchase could cover console and PC. Nobody has yet said how saves, achievements or progress will sync for this game. Those details usually appear on the store page, so check it before you buy.
What the game is
Embers calls it a physics-based incremental sim. The marketing premise is simple:
- You shred documents and sweep up the debris to earn "company merit points."
- You upgrade your tools to process paper faster.
- A "Happiness Manager" supplies mandatory morale support, which is workplace satire in game form.
- "Branching Career Paths" teases what happened to former employees, but no details have been given.
Gematsu reproduces a longer Embers overview with one extra detail. The goal is a $1,000,000 payout. That overview ties the payout to reaching 100 percent disposal efficiency. The Games Press release doesn't repeat that threshold, so treat it as the studio's own marketing language. The $1,000,000 is the in-game objective, not a real prize.
Wishlists and the playtest
Embers reports two audience figures:
- Over 240,000 Steam wishlists.
- Over 85,000 players signed up for the Steam Playtest.
It also says it is currently running closed playtests ahead of the Winter launch.
These numbers come from the developer and haven't been independently verified. The release gives no playtest dates, eligibility rules or system requirements. 85,000 sign-ups doesn't mean 85,000 people are playing, and signing up doesn't guarantee a spot. The release also gives no measurement period or platform breakdown for its claim of "millions of views" and "organic" interest.
What to take from this
- Winter 2026 is the only timing commitment. No date or price has been announced.
- Xbox on PC and Play Anywhere are confirmed by Microsoft's own recap. The Epic and Microsoft Store details rest on single outlets.
- Game Pass inclusion hasn't been announced. Other titles in the same showcase did get Game Pass labels, and this one did not.
- Hardware requirements, accessibility options and multiplayer details haven't been published.
Embers also describes itself as independent and self-publishing, and it names Strayed Lights, Murky Divers and Storebound as earlier work. The studio is based in Strasbourg, France. If you want to follow the game, wishlist it on Steam or Xbox and wait for the store pages. They should settle the storefront, pricing and Play Anywhere questions.
