The spec gap
Nvidia's RTX 50 page lists seven desktop models on the Blackwell architecture: RTX 5090, 5080, 5070 Ti, 5070, 5060 Ti, 5060 and 5050. Nvidia's listed memory and bandwidth figures:
| Card | Memory | Bandwidth | Listed starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 | 32 GB GDDR7 | 1,792 GB/s | $1,999 |
| RTX 5080 | 16 GB GDDR7 | 960 GB/s | $999 |
| RTX 5070 Ti | 16 GB GDDR7 | 896 GB/s | $749 |
| RTX 5070 | 12 GB GDDR7 | 672 GB/s | $549 |
| RX 9070 XT (AMD) | 16 GB GDDR6, 256-bit | up to 640 GB/s | No MSRP on AMD's page |
AMD's RX 9070 XT page also lists 64 MB of Infinity Cache. It lists 304 W typical board power, a 750 W minimum PSU recommendation, PCIe 5.0 x16, DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b.
Treat Nvidia's prices as reference starting points, not what shoppers pay today.
What the bandwidth gap means
At 16 GB, the RTX 5070 Ti's 896 GB/s is 40% more than the RX 9070 XT's 640 GB/s. That is a spec-sheet difference, not a 40% performance lead. Cache, architecture, game engine and settings all change the outcome.
AI TOPS figures are a bigger trap. Nvidia lists a single number per card without stating the precision. AMD lists figures per precision, with and without sparsity. Comparing 3,352 against 779 across vendors isn't valid. Use those numbers to rank cards within one vendor only.
The RTX 5090 is a different class of product. Its 32 GB matters for large local AI models and heavy creative work. It isn't a price-tier rival to anything AMD sells.
What independent testing shows
Don't rely on vendor-chosen game lists. TechSpot's updated 52-game comparison tested each game at two quality presets, with ray tracing on in some configurations and off in others. It found the two cards essentially tied overall.
- 1440p: TechSpot's own text put the RTX 5070 Ti about 1.4% ahead, with 1% lows of 108 fps against 107 fps.
- 4K: TechRepublic, summarizing the same testing, reported 84 fps for the RTX 5070 Ti against 81 fps for the RX 9070 XT, roughly a 4% advantage.
- Game-specific swings: In Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, TechSpot said the Radeon led by 62% at the 4K Basic preset. In Rust, it said the GeForce was ahead by 44% at 4K Max Quality.
- Ray tracing and path tracing: TechSpot called Nvidia the leader here. In Doom with path tracing at 1440p, the RTX 5070 Ti was 63% faster. Even so, it managed only an unplayable 31 fps.
- Memory bandwidth at 4K: TechSpot attributed the Blackwell card's better scaling at 4K partly to its 40% bandwidth advantage. That is the reviewer's explanation, not a measured proof.
These are results from one outlet's test suite. Other reviewers' results shift with upscaling and game selection. TechSpot's earlier DLSS and FSR comparison, for example, found the GeForce taking a small 3% lead in The Last of Us Part I with Quality upscaling.
Price changes the verdict
TechSpot's conclusion was that pricing is likely to be the deciding factor. It reported RX 9070 XT cards at around $700 and the RTX 5070 Ti at about $1,000, nearly 40% more. TechSpot didn't think that premium was justified by the performance on offer. Prices move quickly, so check current listings for your region and board-partner model.
Upscaling and software: what changed in October
AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1. AMD's newsroom announced on October 20, 2026 that FSR Upscaling 4.1 was expanding to:
- Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs
- Ryzen AI Max processors
- Ryzen AI 9 laptops
- Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Ryzen Z2 A handhelds
- Xbox Series X|S, which AMD describes as coming soon
AMD had already delivered 4.1 for RX 7000 in July 2026. The release ships in Adrenalin 26.10.1. For RX 6000 cards, AMD optimized the INT8 model first built for RX 7000.
Xbox availability is not live yet. AMD's announcement says Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet confirmed it is coming soon. It also says feature timing may vary by device, so handheld owners should check with their manufacturer.
Nvidia DLSS 5. Nvidia's October 13 announcement said the October update shrinks the model footprint by 24% to roughly 118 million parameters and cuts 4K VRAM use by 20%. Nvidia says that is half the GPU overhead of the September version at comparable visual fidelity.
These are claims about the model's own cost, not proof of a frame-rate win against AMD. Nvidia also says the new model will boost NBA 2K27 frame rates by up to 1.4x on RTX 50 GPUs. Hogwarts Legacy is due to get DLSS 5 on November 5.
One practical note for GeForce owners: Nvidia has a beta Frame Generation "Preset C" performance mode in the NVIDIA app. It is available on RTX 40 and 50 series GPUs and RTX Spark laptops. Nvidia says it is up to 35% faster on an RTX 5060, with minor image-quality trade-offs.
The takeaway is that FSR's reach keeps growing, which weakens the case for upgrading an older Radeon just for upscaling. DLSS is still limited to RTX hardware.
Buying guidance
- Gaming at 1440p or 4K on a budget: The RX 9070 XT is competitive on raster performance. Tested prices favored it, but confirm current pricing.
- Heavy ray tracing or path tracing: The RTX 5070 Ti has the clearer advantage, according to TechSpot.
- Local AI or large-VRAM workloads: Only the RTX 5090 offers 32 GB. Capacity alone doesn't make it right for every workload, so check your software's support.
- Streaming and video: Nvidia lists three ninth-generation NVENC engines on the RTX 5090 and two on the 5070 Ti, per the original comparison's reading of Nvidia's page. AMD lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 encode on the 9070 XT.
- Before buying: Check your case clearance and PSU. AMD's baseline for the RX 9070 XT is 750 W. Nvidia's comparison page does not list board power, so check the specific board partner's data sheet.
Claims to treat cautiously
The widely circulated claims below are not established by primary sources here:
- Large year-over-year price increases
- Reported partner GDDR6 cost hikes
- RTX 5090 production rumors
- Market-share figures
- Next-generation launch dates, such as RDNA 5 or an RTX 50 Super refresh
None of these has been confirmed by AMD or Nvidia in the material reviewed. Don't base a purchase on them.
Bottom line
Nvidia leads on memory capacity, bandwidth, heavy ray tracing and the top of the range. AMD's RX 9070 XT keeps pace in many games and often wins on price. At the 16 GB tier, the 40% bandwidth gap on paper turns into only a low-single-digit average difference in TechSpot's testing. Buy based on the games you play, the settings you use and the prices you can actually find.
