What Stardock announced
Stardock announced that the Start11 v3 release preview is available, describing Start11 as "the industry's most advanced Start menu." That wording is marketing, not a measured claim. Thurrott.com describes the product more plainly: a Start menu replacement for Windows 11 that adds features for the Taskbar as well as Start.
Stardock's own forums also have a pinned "Start11 v3 Beta Release Feedback" thread, so the preview is a beta-stage release being tested in public. Anyone installing it should expect rough edges.
The new features
- Widgets in Start. More than 20 widgets are available, including calendars, system monitoring, notes and clocks. These are described as Start11's own widgets. Nothing in the reporting says they use Microsoft's Windows Widgets board. The headline's "back" refers to widgets returning to the Start menu, which is a Start11 feature.
- Taskbar Islands. The taskbar gets a rounded, dock-like look. Stardock says it works with both centered and left-aligned layouts "without sacrificing functionality." That is a vendor claim that hasn't been independently tested.
- Taskbar app groups. Hold Alt while dragging a taskbar app icon over another app icon to create a group. Groups can also be pinned as workspaces that launch several apps with one click.
- A new taskbar button. It gives quick access to recently closed applications, overflow items and taskbar tools. New toolbar tools such as visual separators are also included.
- Start menu sharing. Users can share customized Start menu pages, browse pages others have made, and explore a gallery of thousands of Start button designs from inside the app.
Price and bundling
Start11 v3 normally costs $10, but it is $8 during the preview. It is also included in Stardock's Object Desktop suite. That suite includes Fences, Groupy, SoundPackager, DeskScapes and Multiplicity. The announcement doesn't say when the discount ends, or what upgrade terms apply to existing v2 owners.
Context: a product that tracks Windows changes
Stardock's changelog shows how actively Start11 is maintained. Release previews have been used before, for example with the 2.05 beta in 2023. The most recent v2 builds are:
- v2.8 (September 4, 2026). It added support for the Windows 11 26H2 taskbar updates. Taskbar positions are respected only when the setting is "Allow Windows to control taskbar position," which is the default on a clean install.
- v2.81 (September 21, 2026). It fixed a taskbar alignment problem with centered icons on secondary displays.
Stardock's forum also lists user reports against 2.81 on Insider builds. One example is a missing system tray clock. Third-party shell customization depends on Windows internals that Microsoft can change, so it is worth watching whether v3 reduces these problems.
What isn't known yet
The reporting leaves several practical questions open:
- Detailed system requirements, and how v3 behaves on Windows 10.
- Performance and resource impact, especially for system-monitoring widgets that refresh continuously.
- How multi-monitor setups handle Taskbar Islands and groups.
- Whether shared Start pages are moderated, and what they can contain.
- Whether the Alt-drag workspaces restore existing windows or just launch the apps.
Also note that Neowin's coverage carries a disclosure of its relationship with Stardock. The announcement is a company press release, and the feature list comes from Stardock, not from independent testing.
Practical advice
- Treat this as a preview. Don't install it on a production work PC without a restore point.
- If you use another taskbar or shell tool, check for conflicts first. Earlier Start11 changelogs mention compatibility registry switches for third-party tools.
- If you're a v2 owner, wait for clear upgrade terms before paying for the preview discount.
- Try the Alt-drag grouping first. It is the one concrete gesture Stardock has documented, and it shows quickly whether the taskbar changes suit your workflow.
Start11 v3 is a notable step for people who want Windows 11 to feel less rigid. Whether it's worth $8 will depend on how stable the preview proves to be.
