Notebookcheck first reported the latest comments, attributing them to SteamOS developer Pierre-Loup Griffais in an IGN interview. Griffais said the shortage had not materially altered the goals for the next Deck, which Valve still wants to represent a clearly perceptible generational jump rather than an incremental refresh. Other coverage of the IGN interview, including VGC and Tbreak, independently describes the same core position: development work continues, but Valve will not commit to the hardware until it can meet its established target.
For PC gamers and Windows handheld shoppers, this is confirmation that Valve is still pursuing a successor—not evidence that one is near. The company has not announced a release year, SoC supplier, RAM capacity, display, battery specification, or price. Rumored dates, including a frequently repeated 2028 window, remain rumor rather than a Valve commitment.
An unchanged goal is not an unchanged launch plan
The important distinction in Griffais’ answer is between the product brief and the launch decision. Valve says it still wants the same thing from a Steam Deck 2: a significant advance in game performance without giving up the battery life, thermals, usability, and approachable price that made the original hardware competitive.
That standard has been consistent for years. Valve previously said it was not interested in annualized handheld upgrades, because maintaining one broadly understood performance target helps players know what to expect and gives game developers a stable device to optimize for. It later ruled out a Ryzen Z2-based Steam Deck, signaling that a newer AMD mobile chip alone would not qualify as a new generation.
The current comments do not change that policy. They reinforce it under worse supply conditions.
A memory shortage may not rewrite Valve’s internal performance target, but it can absolutely delay the point at which that target is economically viable. A handheld is a tightly constrained design: faster silicon can increase power draw; more RAM can lift the bill of materials; higher-performance memory can bring added cost and board-design complexity. If those pressures push retail pricing too high, the device fails one of Valve’s stated requirements even if the performance is there.
Valve’s statement should therefore be read as a refusal to lower the bar, not an assurance that the original schedule—if one exists internally—has survived intact.
The existing Steam Deck shows what the cost pressure looks like
Valve’s own May 27 Steam Deck announcement provides the clearest evidence that the supply problem is not theoretical. The company restored availability of the OLED models while raising U.S. prices from $549 to $789 for the 512GB Steam Deck OLED and from $649 to $949 for the 1TB model. Valve attributed the increases to higher memory and storage costs alongside wider logistics pressures.
Those are increases of roughly 44 percent and 46 percent, respectively, without a processor, graphics, or display upgrade. Reporting by PC Gamer, TechSpot, and Game Informer confirmed the new prices at the time, but the more consequential fact is Valve’s own wording: the company said the Steam Deck itself had not changed.
That makes the current Deck pricing a useful warning against treating “plans unchanged” as good news for the eventual retail price of a Steam Deck 2. Valve has already shown that it will pass on substantial component-cost increases rather than subsidize an older product indefinitely. A next-generation model will start with a more expensive APU platform and likely require more, faster memory than the present Deck. The cost floor has moved upward before Valve has even announced the new device.
There is another practical implication. The original Steam Deck’s value proposition was unusually clear at launch: it offered a console-like portable PC experience at prices that undercut many competing handheld PCs. At $789 and $949, the OLED models now sit in a much more competitive part of the market, where buyers can compare newer Windows handhelds on raw CPU and GPU speed, higher refresh-rate displays, larger batteries, and broader compatibility with PC game launchers that do not natively support SteamOS.
Valve’s advantage remains SteamOS, its console-style interface, and a hardware-software stack built around Steam. But the price increase reduces the amount of performance compromise buyers may be willing to accept for those benefits.
Valve is waiting for silicon, not simply cheaper RAM
Griffais’ wording also prevents a common misreading of the story: the RAM shortage is not presented as the sole reason a Steam Deck 2 is absent. Valve had already said that available handheld processors did not offer enough of a leap at the right power envelope. Its requirement is not simply “more frames per second”; it is substantially more performance without turning the Deck into a hotter, louder machine with worse battery life.
That is a more demanding threshold than the one many Windows handheld makers use. Companies such as ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI can release updated models on a faster cadence because they are willing to offer multiple performance tiers and let buyers choose between lower-power battery life and higher-wattage gaming modes. Valve has taken the opposite route: one main hardware target, long support life, and a stricter dividing line between a revision and a successor.
The downside is that a Steam Deck 2 can look overdue beside devices based on newer AMD chips. The upside is that Valve avoids fragmenting its audience into yearly performance classes, which matters when its compatibility system and developer guidance are built around a consistent baseline.
Memory pricing complicates the same calculus. Even if a new SoC can meet Valve’s power target, it must also support a configuration that remains affordable enough to sell in volume. Valve can choose a less expensive storage option or adjust an SSD tier; it has much less freedom to cut memory capacity if modern games and the integrated GPU both depend on shared system RAM.
For a handheld using unified memory, RAM is not merely background capacity. It serves Windows or SteamOS, the game itself, and the GPU’s graphics allocation. That makes a memory-cost spike more painful than a simple storage upgrade becoming expensive, and it helps explain why Valve is watching conditions rather than naming a launch date.
Windows handheld buyers should not delay a purchase for this
Valve has confirmed an intent to ship a Steam Deck successor, but it has not announced a product that can be responsibly compared against a current ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, or any other Windows handheld. Buyers choosing hardware for the next 12 to 18 months should evaluate what is available now, not reserve money based on an undefined Valve product.
The choice still comes down to software priorities. Steam Deck and SteamOS remain compelling for people whose libraries are primarily on Steam and who want a suspend-and-resume, controller-first experience with minimal Windows administration. Windows handhelds remain the more flexible option for Game Pass PC, Battle.net, Epic Games Store, anti-cheat-dependent multiplayer titles, mod managers, peripheral software, and applications outside Steam—though that flexibility comes with the familiar small-screen Windows setup burden.
Existing Steam Deck owners also have little reason to interpret this as an impending obsolescence notice. Valve has not announced a new performance tier or changed the current Deck’s support status. Its track record of continuing SteamOS updates and compatibility improvements means the present device remains the known platform, while the successor is still a design objective waiting for the right economics and silicon.
What Valve still has not said
Valve has provided no indication of whether the Steam Deck 2 will use AMD again, whether it will remain x86-based, what display technology it will adopt, or whether it will retain the present 1280-by-800 resolution. It has not said whether it expects the memory shortage to ease, whether it has secured supply commitments, or whether component volatility has changed its target retail price.
Those omissions matter more than any speculative release year. The company’s current pricing proves that its affordable-handheld formula is under pressure; its latest Steam Deck 2 comment proves only that Valve is unwilling to answer that pressure with a weaker successor.
For now, the Steam Deck 2 remains a future product defined by a threshold: Valve wants a major portable-PC performance gain at acceptable battery life and a price it can defend. The memory crisis has not lowered that threshold. It may, however, make the wait—and the eventual price—harder to ignore.
