Sunset Overdrive, the Xbox Game Studios-published open-world shooter, now carries a Playable rating on Steam Deck. ComicBook.com framed this as a "new update" for a 2014 Xbox game. In fact it is a compatibility-rating change for the Steam version, and no new game patch has been documented.

ComicBook.com reports that Sunset Overdrive was previously listed as Unsupported on Steam Deck and is now rated Playable. It is still not Deck Verified. The outlet says it doesn't know what prompted the change, what changed in the game, or who submitted it.

SteamDB's record for the Steam listing (app 847370) fills in some detail:

  • Valve rates every tested game Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown on Steam Deck. SteamDB's entry for Sunset Overdrive shows the category as Playable, with a Steam Deck test timestamp of 16 October 2026 at 16:52:11 UTC.
  • The tested build ID is 3373500.
  • SteamDB lists the game as Windows-only on Steam, published by Xbox Game Studios. Insomniac Games and Blind Squirrel Games are the developers, and the Steam release date is 16 November 2018.

This has nothing to do with Xbox consoles. The 2014 launch was on Xbox One, but the Deck rating applies to the Windows build that arrived on Steam in 2018. Nothing in the evidence suggests an Xbox patch, or that Insomniac or Microsoft pushed anything deliberately.

Why it's Playable and not Verified

ComicBook.com attributes the missing Verified badge to "minor compatibility issues." SteamDB's record is more specific. The Deck test recorded these results:

  • The game shows compatibility warnings on Deck but runs fine.
  • All functionality is reachable with the default controller configuration.
  • The game shows Steam Deck controller icons.
  • In-game text is legible.
  • The default graphics configuration performs well.
  • The one listed caveat is that the game doesn't default to external Bluetooth or USB controllers. You may need to switch the active controller manually through the Quick Access Menu.

SteamDB also shows a SteamOS result of "Compatible," with the same external-controller note. The recommended runtime is listed as Proton Stable.

What the labels mean

Valve's four labels are Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown. Playable means a game works but may require manual changes. Unsupported means Valve currently considers it nonfunctional on Deck. Unknown means Valve hasn't reviewed it yet. A Playable game is assumed to function but may need manual changes to run optimally. A Verified game is assumed to need no configuration work.

Playable is a real step up from Unsupported. It still isn't a promise that everything will work with no effort. These labels describe the result of Valve's review at one point in time. They don't guarantee identical behavior for every player, OS update or game patch.

Players were already running it

The rating may be catching up with what players already reported. Steam community posts from 2023 show users running the game on Deck while it was listed "Not supported." Their reports include:

  • A launch error message that can be closed, after which the game boots.
  • A notice of a corrupt save, with the game otherwise working.
  • A claim that the game runs well with Proton GE.
  • A claim that the game dislikes fast storage and should not be installed on the internal drive.

These are anecdotes from individual players, not systematic testing. I can't verify the storage claim. Also, no source establishes why Valve retested the game, so any link between the old community reports and the new rating is an inference.

What to do if you try it

  1. Check the Steam Deck compatibility section on the game's store page for the current rating and notes.
  2. If you use an external controller, open the Quick Access Menu and switch the active controller manually.
  3. Expect a compatibility warning at launch. Valve's test says it runs fine despite the warning.
  4. If you see a corrupt-save message, note that some players reported it recurring. Treat it as a user report and not a confirmed bug.

Price and context

ComicBook.com puts the Steam price at $20. I haven't confirmed that figure against Steam's store page, so check the current price before buying. SteamDB lists a Metacritic score of 83 for the PC version and a user rating of roughly 88%.

The takeaway

Sunset Overdrive's Steam Deck status moved from a reported Unsupported to Playable, following a 16 October 2026 test. That is a modest piece of news. It is good for Deck owners, and it is a small reminder that Microsoft's older first-party PC ports can quietly become more handheld-friendly without a patch. The cause remains unconfirmed unless Valve, Microsoft or the developers say otherwise.
