What the port is, and what it isn't
The project describes itself as a native PC port of Super Mario Sunshine with the launcher and options of a modern PC release. It is built from the matching decompilation and includes no game data. You must supply your own disc image of the North American release, GMSE01, revision 0.
The repository is a fork. Its page says it was forked from chasem-dev/sms-pc-port. The README credits chasem-dev's port and the decompilation it builds on. It also says the project is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
That makes it a decompilation-based source port, not an emulator and not an official release. XDA reasons that it should therefore be more faithful to the original than the emulation-based Switch versions. That is a plausible expectation, not a measured result.
The release history is short and fast-moving:
- v1.0.0 shipped on October 1.
- v1.1.0 added a one-click HD texture pack installer.
- v1.3.0 added HD cutscenes, which download movie patches of about 5.7 GB and rebuild the movies from your own disc image.
- v1.4.0 landed on October 6 and added an automatic update check in the launcher.
Feature rundown
The project's documentation lists these options:
- Resolution: the GameCube's 640 × 528 baseline can be scaled up to 8×, or 5120 × 4224.
- Anti-aliasing and filtering: 2×, 4× or 8× MSAA, FXAA, anisotropic filtering up to 16×, and contrast-adaptive sharpening.
- Textures: the launcher installs the UHD Texture Pack by qashto and razius, which remakes over 2,000 textures. You can switch it on or off. Dolphin-format texture packs also work from the mods/textures folder.
- Display: windowed, borderless and exclusive fullscreen modes, monitor selection, and vsync off, on or adaptive. Widescreen runs up to 32:9.
- Frame rate: 60 fps gameplay at the game's normal speed. Menus and movies stay at 30 fps, so this is not a blanket 60 fps mode.
- Camera: separate X and Y inversion, speed from 25% to 300%, mouse look, and a free camera that stays where you point it. L recentres the camera.
- Input: every key is rebindable, and Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro and other SDL-recognised controllers work automatically.
Online co-op, with a big caveat
The newest addition is online play for up to eight players. A host and guests enter the same level and episode and see each other's animated, name-tagged Marios. It works on a home network straight away. Over the internet, the host must forward UDP port 27016, which can be changed.
Each player plays their own game for now. Levels, enemies and Shine Sprites are not shared, and shared progress is the next stage. This is ghost-style presence, not true co-op.
Getting it running on Windows
- Download the Windows x64 zip release, named SMS-PC-Port-*-windows-x64.zip.
- Unzip it anywhere and run sms.exe.
- On the launcher's Install page, select your GMSE01 revision 0 disc image and press Install. The launcher accepts ISO, GCM, NKit ISO and Dolphin CISO files, and it checks the game, region and revision. It gives advice if the image is wrong, including converting Dolphin RVZ files.
- Optionally install the HD texture pack and HD cutscenes on the Graphics page.
- Choose your settings and press Play.
Requirements are Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), or 64-bit Linux, plus a GPU with OpenGL 3.3. The developer says an RTX 4070 Ti holds 60 fps at 5× resolution with 4× MSAA. That is a project-reported example, not an independent benchmark. Saves go to %APPDATA%\sms-port\card-a on Windows.
If the launcher rejects your image, the likely cause is the wrong region or revision. The packaged release expects the North American revision 0 disc. The separate decompilation project lists other versions, but those do not apply to this packaged port.
The "shames the Switch 2" claim
XDA reports that the Switch 2 version of Super Mario Sunshine runs at roughly 900p, 30 fps and 4:3. It reports that the original Switch release in Super Mario 3D All-Stars ran at 1080p docked and 720p handheld, at 30 fps in 16:9. I could not independently confirm those figures. Treat them as XDA's reporting.
Nintendo did announce Super Mario Sunshine for its GameCube Nintendo Classics collection on Switch 2, available to Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.
The comparison also has limits:
- Resolution and aspect ratio alone do not settle overall image quality or performance.
- The PC port's own comparison table measures against the GameCube original, not either Switch version.
- The port needs a PC capable of the higher settings. Nintendo's version needs only a subscription and a console.
A fair reading is that the PC port exposes far more options than either official release. That includes higher internal resolution, ultrawide support, a free camera and mod support. Whether that is "better" depends on whether you value those options over a one-click official release.
Platform notes and caveats
XDA says the port also runs on macOS. The project's packaged releases cover only Windows and Linux. macOS appears only in the source-build documentation, for Intel Macs and Apple Silicon under Rosetta 2. Anyone wanting macOS should expect to build from source.
The wording around the disc image also matters. XDA says such images are easy to find online. The project's own stance is that it is meant to be played with a copy of the game you own. Dumping your own disc is the safe route.
One more detail: v1.4.0's notes say chasem-dev's own SMS Launcher is the official launcher for his port. TekRantGaming's launcher features are being contributed to it, one at a time. The ecosystem is still settling, so expect changes.
Bottom line
This is a young but fast-moving project. It delivers real PC-grade options on Windows 10 and 11: high resolution, 60 fps gameplay, ultrawide, HD textures, a free camera and early online presence. The "Switch 2 version put to shame" framing rests on figures I could not confirm, and the Switch 2 comparison is not a controlled test. Players who own the game and have a capable GPU will find the most to like.
