The Geekiary reported the shutdown as a move from online play to an offline version. Bandai Namco’s announcement and follow-up FAQ make the practical stakes clearer: the current PvPvE extraction shooter—where other players are among the hazards—will become a PvE extraction shooter. The publisher has not yet detailed every feature it will remove or everything the offline edition will contain.
Three deadlines, not one shutdown
| When | What Bandai Namco has scheduled |
|---|---|
| October 2026 | The last planned event presenting content for the online service. This is not the server-shutdown date. |
| December 18, 2026, at 00:00 JST | Sales of paid SYN COINS and other specified items end. Existing coins do not necessarily expire that day. |
| December 2026 | The transfer of server-stored saves to local save data is scheduled to begin. |
| Around March 2027 | Bandai Namco plans to announce the specific online-service end date. |
| After May 2027 | Online service ends and the game transitions to its offline-exclusive version. |
Players can continue playing online until the service ends. “After May 2027” is the announced timeframe, not a confirmed shutdown day. Nor does the October cutoff for online events mean work on the offline version stops: Bandai Namco says that development is continuing.
Keeping your save will take action
For PC and Xbox players, the most important distinction is between owning the game and preserving an online save. Bandai Namco says existing owners can update to the offline version for free, but transferring play data will require players to complete designated steps during a transfer period and launch the game with a stable internet connection. Anyone who does not complete that process will start the offline version with new save data.
That is the unusual wrinkle in an “offline” future: the finished game is intended to stand alone, but getting existing server-held progress into it first depends on an online handoff. Bandai Namco has not yet published the transfer instructions, required game version, confirmation screen or method for checking that a transfer succeeded. It has also promised transfer of some online save data and designated purchased items—not every element of an account. There is no responsible shortcut to recommend before those details arrive.
The sensible preparation: watch for the official transfer instructions, allow time to complete the procedure during its designated window, and verify completion using the confirmation method Bandai Namco says it will provide. Simply leaving the game installed should not be treated as a save-transfer plan.
SYN COINS: sales ending is not balance expiry
The Geekiary’s account could leave the impression that currency and purchased items vanish on December 18. Bandai Namco draws a narrower distinction. New sales of paid SYN COINS end at midnight Japan time on that date; coins already bought can still be spent on designated content within their individual expiration periods. Paid coins expire 150 days after initial activation following purchase, and Bandai Namco says it will not refund unused paid coins.
Some items bought with coins, such as costumes, are planned to carry into the offline game if players complete the applicable transfer within the designated period. Which items qualify and the exact conditions remain unannounced. Players with questions about their own balance or purchase history should use Bandai Namco customer support; the publisher says its official X and Discord accounts cannot resolve individual account inquiries.
For perspective, Bandai Namco listed the game’s general release as January 23, 2025, in its North American announcement and January 24, 2025, in its European announcement. The planned end of online play therefore comes a little over two years after launch. Preserving a playable PvE version is better than leaving owners with an unusable installation, but it is not the same as preserving the player-versus-player game they bought. How much of each Drifter’s journey survives will depend on the still-unpublished transfer details—and on players completing that handoff in time.
