A colorful gaming setup displays a cheerful platformer on a monitor and handheld console, with a PC, keyboard, and performance controls.
The Simpsons Game has an unofficial route to Windows, Linux and Steam Deck through The Simpsons Game Recompiled, a fan project based on the 2007 Xbox 360 release. DSOGaming reports that the previously console-only game now supports PC controls, higher rendering resolutions and 60-FPS gameplay. This is a recompilation project, not an official remaster.

The project’s GitHub release list identifies v0.0.6.2, released October 2, 2026, as the latest build. Earlier versions are also listed, so the news is an updated, increasingly capable PC port—not its first public executable.

Native game code, with compatibility layers underneath

According to the project’s README, the Xbox 360 PowerPC executable is translated ahead of time into C++ and compiled for x86-64. Its game code therefore runs directly on the PC CPU. However, the Xenia-derived ReXGlue runtime still supplies Xbox 360 kernel, graphics, audio and input layers. “Native” does not mean every console component has disappeared. Windows supports Direct3D 12 or Vulkan; Linux uses Vulkan.

That distinction matters: recompilation changes how the executable runs, but compatibility work remains part of the package.

PC controls and a less forgetful launcher

DSOGaming highlights rebindable keyboard-and-mouse controls, including mouse-wheel and side-button assignments, sensitivity adjustment and inverted Y-axis. The defaults use WASD movement, mouse camera control, Space to jump and mouse buttons for attacks. F1 displays control mappings; F4 opens settings. The active game window captures the pointer and releases it when you switch applications.

The launcher also gains light and dark themes, repaired artwork and settings that save immediately. Its revised render-scale and sharpening controls should make configuration less confusing. On Windows, a timer-resolution change is intended to improve audio delivery and frame pacing—not a guarantee that every timing problem is solved.

Better performance, but 60 FPS is the ceiling

The developer reports roughly 59 FPS versus 50 FPS in Springfield on Steam Deck at 2x internal resolution. Linux and Steam Deck packages include precompiled shaders, while smaller render targets save approximately 95 MB of video memory at 2x. These are project-reported results, not independent Windows benchmarks.

Gameplay supports 60 FPS; menus, loading screens and the title screen remain at 30 FPS. Supersampling, anisotropic filtering and FXAA provide image-quality options.

Keep these developer-documented limitations in mind:

  • Settings above 60 FPS add no frames and can worsen pacing.
  • Windows keyboard-and-mouse support has received less testing.
  • Occasional Springfield frame drops remain at 2x.
  • If the dam sequence in “Lisa the Tree Hugger” causes unexpected deaths, switch temporarily to 30 FPS.

Windows setup and troubleshooting

The README requires your own Xbox 360 ISO, approximately 5 GB of storage and a compatible graphics driver. Standard packages require AVX2; older SSE4.2-capable CPUs need the -NoAVX2 package.

  1. Download and extract the appropriate project release.
  2. Run simpsons-launcher.exe.
  3. Select your ISO in Install, then press Play.

Existing installations update through About. If Windows videos appear black, the README recommends switching the graphics backend to Vulkan.

The Windows executables are unsigned. The developer describes possible Defender or Edge detections as false positives, but that assertion is not an independent safety assessment. Do not treat this article as clearance to bypass a warning.

Bottom line: the meaningful advance is PC usability, not merely sharper Springfield scenery. Approach the port as a developing fan project, retain its documented workarounds, and resist the temptation to turn every available frame-rate setting up to eleven.
