Tomb Raider is celebrating three decades of Lara Croft, but its next return to the beginning has practical implications for PC players beyond anniversary nostalgia. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are developing Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the 1996 original scheduled for February 12, 2027. The official announcement lists Steam and Xbox Series X|S alongside PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

Xbox Wire marked the anniversary on October 21, 2026, with a retrospective featuring Meagan Marie, Crystal Dynamics’ director of brand creative and author of 20 Years of Tomb Raider. Its central question is familiar to anyone watching a beloved game return: how much can change before the character feels different?

According to Xbox Wire, the original Tomb Raider emerged from Core Design in Derby, England, with six principal developers supported by additional art and audio contributors. Designer Toby Gard’s heroine combined intelligence with athleticism—a foundation Marie says has survived successive reinventions.

Crystal Dynamics subsequently brought its interpretation to Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld, then rebooted Lara’s story in 2013. Marie recalls introducing that reboot through her work at Game Informer and hearing from fans who encountered the franchise through those newer games. For that audience, the reboot is childhood nostalgia rather than a recent departure.

Marie describes Legacy of Atlantis as an attempt to bring those interpretations together while welcoming both returning players and newcomers. That is a creative ambition, not confirmation of multiple playable versions of Lara.

What “reimagining” means this time

The clearest distinction from a straightforward visual refresh comes from Amazon Game Studios’ official June 2 announcement. It says the Unreal Engine 5 project expands environments and rebuilds puzzles in Peru’s Lost Valley. Previously separate rooms become partially connected spaces that players can approach from different directions; even the familiar cog puzzle is being reconsidered.

That matters because changing spatial connections can change how players understand and solve an environment. The stated approach suggests a reconstruction of the adventure, not simply the old geometry wearing a sharper jacket. Whether those changes preserve the original’s atmosphere remains something the finished game must demonstrate.

The useful distinction: returning fans should expect familiar foundations, but not necessarily identical routes or puzzle solutions.

Windows requirements offer a concrete planning check

Steam’s listing supplies information absent from the anniversary discussion: published Windows hardware requirements. Both tiers specify 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, 16GB of RAM, and 80GB of available storage.

ComponentMinimumRecommended
ProcessorIntel Core i5-8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600Intel Core i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
GraphicsGTX 1070 8GB, RTX 2060 Super, or Radeon RX 5700RTX 3080 or Radeon RX 6800 XT

These are the configurations published on the Steam store page.

The requirements section does not attach resolution or frame-rate targets to those tiers. Consequently, “recommended” should not be read as a promise of 4K, maximum settings, or a particular frame rate. For upgrade planning, the specifications are a starting point—not a benchmark result.

Steam currently lists the Standard Edition at $59.99, with Amazon Game Studios as publisher. That is the inspected listing’s price, not a guarantee that regional pricing or future offers will remain unchanged.

An anniversary celebration, not a launch-day review

Happy Gamer also reports that Dead by Daylight acknowledged Lara’s anniversary on October 19 with a social post connecting her adventures to its Fog setting. That remains an attributed anniversary salute, rather than evidence of a newly announced crossover release.

The anniversary retrospective itself deserves a similar distinction: Xbox Wire’s piece was written by Amazon Game Studios’ global head of campaigns, content and community. It offers a firsthand account of the project’s intentions, but it is publisher-led storytelling—not an independent assessment of the upcoming game.

For Windows players, the substantive takeaway is therefore straightforward: Legacy of Atlantis has a scheduled February 12, 2027 release, published PC requirements, and officially described changes that extend beyond graphics. The birthday celebrates where Lara has been; the rebuilt adventure still has to prove where she goes next.
