That native baseline is important. The case for an add-on is not that Windows lacks virtual desktops, names, backgrounds, or basic workspace switching. Desk Switcheroo, SylphyHornPlus, and FancyWM each pursue a different version of that idea.

The add-on case becomes stronger when desktop changes happen dozens of times in a day, when window placement follows repeatable patterns, or when the user wants feedback that Task View does not foreground during ordinary work. The three projects below should be considered based on those interaction needs, not as universal replacements for Windows’ own virtual desktops.

That approach can be easier to understand than a shortcut-heavy system for a user who prefers visible controls. Someone handling temporary projects could, in principle, use the documented controls to create a workspace, move a relevant window into it, identify it by label or color, and remove it when the task is over. The usefulness of that workflow depends on whether taskbar-based manipulation is faster for the individual than opening Task View or using native keyboard navigation.
Desk Switcheroo’s maintainer documentation also claims support for window rules and desktop-event hooks. The documented examples of these feature categories include automatically placing windows on selected desktops and running commands when desktop events occur. If those functions meet a user’s needs in their own environment, they could make virtual desktops part of a lightweight automation workflow rather than solely a manual sorting mechanism.

Rather than centering the experience on a taskbar widget, its documented focus is on rapid input methods and feedback about the active desktop.
The project documentation lists global hotkeys, desktop-switch notifications, per-desktop wallpapers, synchronization of desktop names and wallpapers, mouse rocker and wheel gestures, and desktop-management tools. It also lists creating, removing, and reordering desktops on Windows 11, plus settings export and import.
For people who switch frequently, the notification and synchronization features may be as valuable as the switching command itself. Virtual desktops are useful only when the user can confidently recognize the current context. A visible desktop name and a distinct background can reduce uncertainty after a switch, particularly when several desktops contain similar combinations of browser, messaging, and document windows.
Mouse gestures are SylphyHornPlus’s clearest contrast with Task View and with a taskbar-oriented utility. The project’s documentation says rocker and wheel gestures can be used for desktop actions. That may suit someone whose work keeps one hand on the mouse in browsers, spreadsheets, creative applications, or communication clients. It will not suit every user: gesture systems ask users to memorize input patterns, and some people will prefer explicit hotkeys or an on-screen control.
The configuration export and import functions documented by the maintainer are potentially useful for users who have invested time in a personalized shortcut and gesture setup. Still, the available material is project documentation, not an independent reliability, compatibility, or security assessment. Prospective users should judge whether the utility’s input-oriented model is worth adding to their Windows setup and test its core controls before relying on them in a time-sensitive workflow.
FancyWM: native desktops plus dynamic tiling
FancyWM changes more than the switching method. Its maintainer describes it as a dynamic tiling window manager for Windows 10 and Windows 11 that integrates with Windows’ native virtual desktops. The key proposition is that desktops separate groups of work, while a tiling manager controls the geometry of the windows within each group.
FancyWM’s documentation lists horizontal, vertical, and stack panels. It says sibling windows resize automatically when one closes, and documents rearranging windows with either keyboard or mouse controls. It also states that layouts can be configured per monitor or globally.
This addresses a different problem from desktop selection. A virtual desktop can answer, “Which windows belong to this task?” Dynamic tiling also attempts to answer, “How should those windows occupy the display?” A user doing repeated research work, for example, may want a browser, notes, and a document editor kept in a stable panel arrangement rather than manually snapping and resizing those windows after every change.
The project’s documentation further describes integration with native virtual desktops, including direct desktop-selection shortcuts and window-moving shortcuts. This can make FancyWM attractive to users who want both faster workspace movement and a structured layout inside each workspace.
That structure is also its main trade-off. Dynamic tiling adds panels, movement behavior, and layout conventions that may be unnecessary for users who favor freely overlapping windows, irregular sizes, or spontaneous manual placement. FancyWM is therefore not simply a more elaborate desktop switcher. It is a different window-management model layered over Windows’ own desktops.
