What Winhanced is, and what it isn't
PlayDayOne's Jon Clarke calls Winhanced a full replacement for the Xbox app's full-screen experience, also known as Xbox mode. That is close, but "replacement" oversells it.
Microsoft's support documentation describes Xbox mode as a console-inspired, controller-optimized way to use Windows. Winhanced describes itself as a gaming mode for Windows: one controller-first home for games on Steam, Xbox, Epic, GOG, PlayStation, Battle.net, EA, Ubisoft and more. So it isn't a new operating system. It's an alternative home screen and utility layer living inside Windows 11.
Microsoft says Xbox mode needs Windows 11 24H2 or later. It also says Xbox mode is available only in supported markets. On handhelds, you pick the home app under Start > Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
Release status
Winhanced 1.0 Beta is a free download for Windows 11, and the beta runs for 30 days while the team fixes the last bugs. The vendor's announcement is dated October 28, 2026. Its download page lists later builds, and the newest is 1.0.0.5, dated November 6, 2026. That build's note says the fan curve card on the ROG Xbox Ally and X20 had not been showing, and that it should now appear.
Treat this as beta software. Two X20-specific fixes show how fresh it is. Build 1.0.0.4 says the Xbox button light should hopefully now follow your Armoury Crate setting, including after the screen turns back on. The 1.0 patch notes also say the X20's Library and Command Center buttons, start-up lighting and Turbo while plugged in now use the X20's own settings.
What the reviewer reports
PlayDayOne says Winhanced pulls games from Xbox, Steam, GOG, Epic, Ubisoft Connect, EA, GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming into one interface. It also lists these features:
- Cross-platform friends lists and Discord integration.
- A replacement for ASUS's Command Center, with per-game TDP control.
- Windows, driver and Winhanced updates in one place.
- Enhanced sleep for battery life, OptiScaler, and forced AMD FSR 4.
- Custom box art, hero images, themes and a custom boot-up sequence.
The reviewer says Windows 11 intrudes less than it does in the vanilla Xbox app experience, but it "still crops up now and then." The reviewer also says they haven't tested PlayStation library linking or remote play. Those claims, and the "I'm not going back" conclusion, are impressions. The piece gives no measured battery life, frame rates or load times.
What's new in 1.0, per the vendor
The headline feature is an in-game overlay opened with the Guide button. Achievement pop-ups and friend messages appear even while the overlay is closed, and the overlay is in Early Access during the beta. Early Access gives supporters new features 30 days before everyone else. That is probably the "Early Access" the reviewer mentions, though the review itself only says developers can be supported through Patreon. Winhanced's own release says Early Access is for Patreon supporters and Discord Supporter+ members.
Other 1.0 additions include:
- OptiScaler: Winhanced says that to run FSR 4, it adds a certificate to Windows and removes it when you turn FSR 4 off or uninstall Winhanced. Think about that before enabling it on a machine you care about.
- Game compression and Storage page: You can move, copy or compress games.
- Cloud saves, GeForce NOW and a controller keyboard.
- A setting that holds Windows updates until you stop playing.
The Xbox library caveat
This matters if your library is mostly Game Pass or Microsoft Store titles. Winhanced's patch notes say OptiScaler and FSR 4 do not work with games in the Xbox library at this time, so the option doesn't show up for them. The same notes say compression doesn't work for Xbox library games either. Xbox games you own do appear in Winhanced when the Xbox app is installed, without signing in to Xbox in Winhanced.
FSR 4.1 on the X20 has two sources
There are two separate FSR 4.1 routes on the X20, and they're easy to mix up.
ASUS announced an FSR Upscaling 4.1 preview for the ROG Xbox Ally X and X20 on October 20, with the preview update due October 23. To try it, open Armoury Crate SE, go to Update Center > Preview Updates and install the GPU driver. Then add the FSR tile in Command Center and turn on FSR in a supported game. ASUS warns that preview builds may be unstable. It also says not to combine FSR with RSR.
Winhanced's FSR 4.1 switch is a separate feature. Winhanced says it works on AMD handhelds, including Radeon graphics AMD doesn't officially support for FSR 4. On the X20, ASUS's own path is the one the manufacturer documents.
Device support
Winhanced lists the ROG Ally family as the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally X20. Winhanced says it tested 1.0 on a 2024 ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally X20, Legion Go, Legion Go 2, OneXPlayer 3, OneXPlayer X2 Mini Pro, MSI Claw 8 AI+ and MSI Claw 8 EX.
Library, keyboard and streaming features work on any Windows 11 PC. Hardware control, such as fan curves, lighting and button remapping, varies by handheld model. An X20 owner shouldn't assume a feature on the list works the same way on every device.
Xbox mode's own limits
Microsoft's documentation is blunt about Xbox mode's constraints, and these are why alternatives appeal:
- Only one window is displayed at a time.
- Apps that open multiple windows may show only the latest one.
- Apps without full-screen support sit on a black background.
- Some desktop shortcuts are disabled.
On handhelds, turning on "Enter Xbox mode on startup" makes Windows limit background processes to improve performance. Microsoft also notes you can set startup apps to start only when you exit to the desktop. That trims overhead without installing anything. Winhanced's own FAQ says Windows launches Winhanced directly rather than racing to intercept Xbox, though that's the vendor's description of its own design.
Before you install
- Remember it's a 30-day beta. Expect bugs, and expect X20-specific fixes to keep arriving.
- Check that you're on Windows 11, and on 24H2 or later if you want to use Xbox mode as a baseline.
- Expect FSR 4 setup to add a certificate to Windows.
- If most of your games are in the Xbox library, don't count on OptiScaler, FSR 4 or compression for them.
- Don't assume the overlay is free. It's Early Access during the beta.
The takeaway
PlayDayOne's review is an enthusiastic first impression, and Winhanced's documentation backs up much of the feature list. What neither provides is independent measurement. Whether it beats Microsoft's updated Xbox app on speed, battery or stability is still open. As a free, controller-first alternative to Xbox mode for the X20, it's worth a look, with the beta caveats above in mind.
