What Xbox actually announced
Xbox announced that Insiders could get an early look at Mythic Achievements starting September 29. It describes them as a way to celebrate completed games and milestones. The post came from Alex Charters, Senior Product Manager, and Eden Marie, Principal Software Engineering Lead, and Xbox Wire headlined it as "One of our Most Player-Requested Features."
The rules, as Xbox states them:
- The requirement: You earn a Mythic when you complete all of a game's original achievements.
- DLC and updates: Achievements added later through DLC or updates aren't required. Once you earn Mythic status, it's "yours to keep."
- Expansions: A game that later gets an expansion with extra achievements doesn't lose its Mythic.
- Retroactive credit: Xbox says Mythic Achievements have already been added to eligible games you completed in the past, including Xbox 360 titles.
Xbox doesn't list which games count or spell out every eligibility condition. So "every Xbox game ever" would be an overreach. Think of it as "eligible games, Xbox 360 included."
New profile and progress tools
Xbox also changed how completion shows up in the interface:
- Gaming tab: Profiles get a Gaming tab with a dedicated view of completed games, tracking toward your next Gamerscore milestone, and a distinct heroic frame around Mythics in your history. Players can also open friends' Gaming tabs.
- Progress bar: A bar at the top of each game's achievement list shows how close you are to Mythic status. You can filter to the original achievements you still need, and later additions are tagged "add-on."
- Other surfaces: Similar progress information appears in the Guide and on the Achievement details screen.
Retroactive unlocks may also arrive quietly. TweakTown reports that retroactive unlocks don't trigger the achievement pop-up animation. If you're in the preview, check your profile instead of waiting for a fanfare.
How it compares with the Platinum Trophy
Sony's own blog dates the Platinum Trophy to 2008. A PlayStation Blog post from August 4, 2008 announced a Trophy patch for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune with 48 Trophies in total, counting the Platinum. A 2012 PlayStation Blog post separately says the Trophy system was introduced to PS3 in the middle of 2008. The "18 years" figure is therefore a rounded span from 2008 to 2026.
The two systems share the idea of rewarding a finished game, but they differ in some ways:
| Aspect | Xbox Mythic | PlayStation Platinum |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | All original achievements | All of the game's other Trophies |
| DLC handling | Later add-ons not required | Not covered by the sources I gathered |
| Past progress | Applied to eligible past games, Xbox 360 included | Not covered by the sources I gathered |
| Availability | Xbox Insider preview | Established feature |
One small historical contrast: Naughty Dog said in 2008 that the Uncharted patch couldn't award Trophies retroactively, and players had to start a new game. Xbox is making retroactivity a headline feature. The two cases are 18 years apart and not directly comparable, but the contrast is telling.
One more caveat: one outlet notes the announcement attaches no Gamerscore to a Mythic. Xbox's post, as supplied, doesn't mention any Gamerscore for it. It marks a finished game, but I wouldn't treat it as a Gamerscore booster.
Availability: Insiders only, no public date
This is a preview. As of September 30, only Xbox Insiders had it, and Microsoft hadn't given a date for everyone else. I found nothing newer that changes that. Some outlets say a wider rollout is coming, but I found no confirmed date. The GameRant piece that prompted this story makes the same point, saying Mythics have not reached all users yet.
To try it, the Xbox Insider Hub is available for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, and for Windows PC. Xbox's announcement says that is how you join the program.
Why it matters, and the caveats
For achievement hunters, the add-on rule is the practical win. DLC has long been the bane of the completionist, as Lords of Gaming notes: new achievement lists could take away your 100% completion. Under Mythic rules, a finished game stays finished.
My own view, based on general industry knowledge and not on any quoted source, is that this is a symbolic win more than a technical one. Achievement systems are social-status machines. Having a matching badge removes one talking point from console-war arguments. It doesn't change which games you can play or how.
A few cautions on the source coverage:
- GameRant says Sony sent out a survey about possible Trophy changes earlier this year. I found no primary corroboration for that, so treat it as unverified.
- GameRant's claims about Nintendo and Steam have no support in Xbox's announcement, so I'm leaving them out.
- Whether Sony responds is speculation. Nothing I found says it must or will.
Bottom line
Xbox Mythic Achievements are real, in preview, and retroactive for eligible games. They match the Platinum Trophy's core idea while treating DLC more gently. PlayStation's Trophy system is unchanged. Xbox has simply stopped being the platform without a completion crown.
