October 2026 is busy for Xbox players. Pure Xbox's monthly release calendar has about 75 dated entries for October, running from October 1 to October 30. The Coalition's Gears of War prequel is the headliner, followed by a new Call of Duty, a Castlevania, the return of Ace Combat and a long list of smaller indie games. A few dates need correcting, and Game Pass access differs by plan, so the details are below.

The headliners at a glance

Pure Xbox picked ten games as the biggest Xbox releases of the month. Two of them have been checked against official publisher pages. For the rest, the date shown is the one Pure Xbox reported.

Correction: Ace Combat 8 launches October 2

Pure Xbox lists Ace Combat 8 on October 1, but Bandai Namco's official June 2 announcement doesn't match that. According to the publisher, Deluxe Edition owners get early access on September 29, 2026, and everyone else gets the game on October 2. Bandai Namco's page for its live-action prequel short film also gives October 2 as launch day.

Other details from Bandai Namco:

  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The publisher lists Steam as the PC storefront, not the Microsoft Store.
  • Editions: Standard and Deluxe.
  • Preorder bonus: All digital preorders include a copy of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War (2006) and an unlocked playable F-14A.
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 5. It's the first mainline Ace Combat in seven years, developed by Bandai Namco Aces.
  • Setting: The game returns to Strangereal. The player flies as "Wings of Theve" alongside the Joker Flight squadron, fighting the Republic of Sotoa after it occupies the Federation of Central Usea.
  • Seasonal pass: A separately sold Premium Ace Pass unlocks 30 pass levels right away. The Deluxe Edition includes a voucher for one season.

Anyone who planned an October 1 evening flight on a standard copy should reschedule for the 2nd.

Gears of War: E-Day: the October 1 listing is early access

Pure Xbox's calendar has "Gears of War: E-Day – Early Access" on October 1 and the full launch on October 6. That's correct, but people skimming the list may think the game comes out on the 1st for everyone. It doesn't. Microsoft's official game page and FAQ say:

  • General release: October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 PC, through both the Microsoft Store and Steam.
  • Early access: Up to five days, starting October 1, only for Premium Edition owners or people who buy the Premium upgrade.
  • Game Pass: Available on day one, October 6, with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
  • Pricing (US store page): Standard Edition $69.99, Premium Edition $99.99, or a $30 upgrade from Standard to Premium. Premium adds early access, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs, and 1,000 Iron, the game's premium currency.
  • Xbox Play Anywhere: Buy once and play on console and PC, with shared progress and achievements.
  • Performance target: Rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, aiming for 4K and up to 60fps in campaign and multiplayer. Microsoft notes you need a compatible display for that.

One note for PC players and anyone planning co-op: Microsoft's fine print says online campaign co-op, Horde Siege and Versus need a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer. Two-player split-screen is console only. If your plan was couch co-op on a gaming PC, Microsoft's own listing doesn't support it.

The story is set 14 years before the original Gears of War. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago live through Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first comes up from underground.

Summary: Premium buyers start October 1, everyone else October 6. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members play on launch day, and split-screen is a console feature.

Game Pass in October: what's confirmed so far

Pure Xbox's Game Pass section has ten entries:

  • Keeper (Oct 2): moves into Game Pass Premium
  • Gears of War: E-Day (Oct 6)
  • Echo Weaver and Neon Abyss 2 (Oct 8)
  • Deep Dish Dungeon and Valor Mortis (Oct 13)
  • Beyond These Stars (Oct 15): PC only
  • Chained Beasts (Oct 15)
  • The Seance of Blake Manor (Oct 27)
  • Terrible Lizards (Oct 29)

Game Rant's tally a few days earlier matches everything except Keeper. It counted nine games confirmed for the Xbox Game Pass October 2026 lineup, with Beyond These Stars and Chained Beasts making their debuts on October 15. Keeper isn't new to Game Pass, which explains the difference. GuruGamer points out that it is expanding from Ultimate and PC Game Pass into the Premium tier.

There's more detail on Chained Beasts. Game Rant describes it as a one-to-four-player gladiator roguelite from Sydney studio Featherweight Games, self-published through the ID@Xbox program, with the game set to join Xbox Game Pass on day one, and playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming as well as on Series X|S and PC.

This isn't the full October lineup yet. GuruGamer notes that Microsoft has not published the full Wave 2 slate yet, and Game Rant expects the Wave 1 announcement for October 6, the same day Gears of War launches. According to GuruGamer, no official October departure list has been posted yet, but eight games are already scheduled to leave Game Pass on September 30, including Atomfall, Sifu, and Little Nightmares 2 Enhanced Edition. If you're partway through one of those, you have a couple of days left.

There's also some uncertainty in the background. Vice notes rumors circulating that Xbox has plans to change Game Pass tiers and do away with Day One releases in 2027, none of that has been confirmed. None of that affects October.

*Pure Xbox lists Ratatan on both October 14 and October 15 and doesn't say why. It could be a time-zone difference between regions or a simple duplicate. Check the store listing for your region before you plan around either date.

On Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen: a Pure Xbox commenter calls it the Dark Arisen dlc for Dragons Dogma 2. If that's right, it's an add-on for existing owners rather than a new standalone game. Treat that as a reader's description until Capcom's listing confirms it.

What it means for Windows and Xbox players

Some practical takeaways, based on general platform knowledge and the official pages above:

  1. Early access isn't launch day. Both Gears and Ace Combat charge extra to play a few days early, Gears through its Premium Edition and Ace Combat through its Deluxe Edition. If you're on Game Pass or bought the standard edition, your dates are October 6 and October 2.
  2. Check which store a PC game is on. Gears comes to both the Microsoft Store and Steam, and Play Anywhere applies to the Xbox/Microsoft Store purchase. Ace Combat 8 is Steam-only on PC according to Bandai Namco, so you can't get it through the Xbox app on Windows.
  3. Check your Game Pass plan. Day-one games like E-Day go to Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Beyond These Stars is PC-only, and Keeper's October change applies only to Premium. Look at the individual listing in the Xbox app, which shows console, PC and cloud availability for your plan.
  4. Plan your storage. Gears, Call of Duty and Ace Combat are all big modern games arriving within three weeks of each other. Clearing some SSD space before October 6 is easier than uninstalling on launch night.
  5. Expect Game Pass additions. With Wave 1 expected around October 6 and Wave 2 later in the month, more titles, including big catalog games, will probably be added.

Pure Xbox labels its lists "so far," and publishers can move dates. The Ace Combat date mismatch shows why it's worth checking the publisher's official page before you plan around a date. Official confirmation so far covers the two biggest launches: Ace Combat 8 on October 2 and Gears of War: E-Day on October 6, with early access on September 29 and October 1 for those who pay for the upgrade.
