ZainTECH is Zain Group's digital-solutions arm. It says its collaboration with Dell Technologies brings Dell PowerProtect Data Domain and PowerScale solutions to organizations across the region. It also says the solutions are available through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. This article separates what the announcement establishes from what it leaves open, and adds what Microsoft and Dell document about the underlying products.
What was announced
The Kuwait Times piece is dated November 2, 2026. Zain's own press release for the same announcement carries an earlier date, October 26, 2026. Treat the earlier date as the company announcement and the later one as when the coverage ran.
The announcement is commercial. ZainTECH names two Dell products and a procurement route, and it positions them for storage modernization and cyber recovery. It does not name customers, give pricing or service-level terms, or list the countries where the offer can be ordered. It also gives no architecture for how ZainTECH delivers the service.
CEO Andrew Hanna framed the aim this way: helping enterprises modernize their infrastructure strategies, strengthen cyber resilience, and build the foundation required to support future innovation, including AI-driven workloads. That is a company statement of intent. The release offers no benchmarks, recovery-time figures or tested restores to back it up.
What the two Dell products do
The announcement splits the roles. Dell PowerScale is aimed at rapidly expanding unstructured data and high-performance workloads, while Data Domain is aimed at backup efficiency and cyber recovery.
PowerScale
Microsoft Learn describes Dell PowerScale for Azure - Dell Managed as a file storage solution for demanding, scale-out workloads. Its listed use cases include:
- AI, machine learning and analytics datasets
- Media workflows
- Multiprotocol file services over NFS, SMB and S3
- Hybrid scenarios that move data between on-premises PowerScale and Azure
Microsoft also lists asynchronous replication for data migration or disaster recovery.
Microsoft's own Tech Community posts show this service has matured recently. A September 29, 2026 post announced general availability of Dell PowerScale for Azure – Dell managed. A separate Azure Storage post says it provides up to 8.4 PB in a single namespace and supports simultaneous access over NFS, SMB, and S3. That post says it is generally available today in the East US Azure region. The preview had been announced for nine regions, so check regional availability yourself. The announcement does not say which Azure regions or countries ZainTECH's offer covers.
Data Domain
Microsoft Marketplace describes PowerProtect Data Domain Virtual Edition as software-defined data protection that deploys on supported servers or in the cloud. The listing cites backup to cloud, disaster recovery to cloud, cloud-to-cloud backup, cyber recovery, long-term retention and data immutability. It says the platform supports cloud instances up to 256 TB.
The listing also says the product is available for purchase only via private offer. It tells buyers to see their Dell or channel account manager for a quote. The announcement does not say which Data Domain variant ZainTECH is offering. This is the Marketplace listing for the virtual edition, so don't assume it describes ZainTECH's terms.
"Available through Azure Marketplace" does not mean self-service
Dell's architecture paper for Dell Managed PowerScale for Azure, dated October 20, 2026, describes two kinds of Marketplace offer. A public plan is visible to any customer in the Marketplace. A private offer is available on request, with Dell Sales providing a quote.
Combined with the Data Domain private-offer rule, the phrase "available through Azure Marketplace" tells you very little about the buying experience. You should confirm several things before assuming a quick portal purchase:
- Whether the offer is a public plan or a private offer
- Who invoices you, and whether the spend counts toward an Azure consumption commitment
- What ZainTECH adds beyond reselling, such as design, operations or support
- Which regions and countries the offer covers
Dell's paper says the Dell-managed PowerScale service is billed through Microsoft and is eligible for the Microsoft Azure Consumption Commitment. That applies to Dell's own Marketplace service. Whether ZainTECH's arrangement works the same way is not stated.
Governance details to check
Dell's paper describes Dell Managed PowerScale for Azure as follows:
- Where it runs: Clusters are deployed in Dell's Azure subscription and reached from the customer's subscription. Customers attach through VNet injection to a delegated subnet.
- Encryption: Encryption at rest is on by default with Microsoft-managed keys. The service does not support customer-managed keys for disk encryption according to Dell's paper. Regulated buyers should note this.
- Roles: Dell's operators get a DellAdmin role for hardware and cluster operations. Dell says that role is not meant to view customer data. Customers get a CustomerAdmin role for shares and data services.
- Tiers: Dell lists 1-year and 3-year terms. Premium covers 65–2,100 TB at up to 53.2 GB/s. Plus covers 65–4,200 TB at up to 27.6 GB/s. Standard covers 350–8,440 TB at up to 22.1 GB/s. These are Dell's stated specifications, not guarantees for any workload.
- Unsupported features: Dell's paper lists IPv6, HDFS, FTP, SmartSync and SmartPools tiering as unsupported. It also says SmartLock compliance mode is unsupported, though enterprise mode is supported.
Dell documents these points for its Dell-managed Azure service. The ZainTECH announcement does not say which PowerScale variant or version it offers, so none of these limits is confirmed for its package.
What "cyber resilience" can and can't mean here
The announcement leans heavily on resilience language. The documented features are backup, retention, immutability, replication and snapshot-style protection. Those are useful building blocks, but they are not a guarantee against ransomware. The announcement gives no threat model, recovery-time objective or independent assessment of the offer.
A practical test for any buyer is whether they can restore at scale. That means testing recovery of a representative dataset from an immutable copy, and checking that backup credentials are separate from production identities.
Who should care
Azure-centric IT teams in the region get another procurement route for Dell storage and data protection. That matters mostly where there is an existing relationship with ZainTECH or a spending commitment to use up. Teams running NFS/SMB-heavy or AI-oriented data platforms may find PowerScale's Azure integration relevant. For everyone else, this is a distribution deal rather than a new technology.
The sensible next step is to ask ZainTECH for the specific offer details listed above and to read Dell's limitation tables before committing.
