The immediate action is to identify the August 11, 2026 Windows security updates applicable to every supported desktop and server build in the estate, approve them through the organization’s ordinary change process, and verify installation. Microsoft has confirmed the vulnerability’s existence and that a fix is available through its Security Update Guide; it has not publicly described the flaw’s root cause, vulnerable component, affected build list, CVSS score, exploit status, mitigation, or workaround.

That absence is the real operational fact on day one. Zero Day Initiative’s May Patch Tuesday review listed it as Important with a CVSS 3.1 score of 7.8 and no known exploitation at release.

Those prior entries are useful context but not a substitute for evidence about CVE-2026-61356. A detection rule, compensating control, affected-product list, or patch validation result built for either earlier CVE cannot be assumed to cover the August vulnerability. Three CVEs can inhabit the same product family and impact category while touching entirely different binaries, architectures, or feature paths.

Patch by Build, Not by the Presence of RDP​
