computer id

About this tag
The tag 'computer id' on WindowsForum.com covers discussions about the unique identifier Microsoft uses to track Windows licenses and activation. In one thread, a user asks whether a dual-boot system with two base licenses can select which license to replace during a Windows 8 upgrade, since the upgrade checks the computer ID against Microsoft's database. Another thread reports a problem where the computer ID changes on every restart in Windows 7 RC, causing issues with a program registered to that ID. The user seeks a way to make Windows stick to one computer ID across restarts. These posts highlight how the computer ID affects license validation and software registration.
