drive number

About this tag
The drive number tag covers discussions about Windows reassigning physical disk identifiers such as Disk0 and Disk1, often after a Windows 11 update or clean installation. Users report that the operating system may swap drive numbers, causing confusion about which disk is the primary boot drive. This can affect system configuration, boot order, and disk management tasks. The tag includes troubleshooting steps for restoring the original drive numbering, such as reverting to a previous Windows version or performing a clean install. It is relevant for users managing multiple drives in a Windows environment who encounter unexpected changes to disk enumeration.
