Overview of the Hacks
Griffin introduced innovative alternatives to expensive filmmaking equipment, utilizing common household items that anyone can find around their home. Here’s a summary of the featured hacks:- Furniture Pads for Dolly Shots: Instead of a traditional dolly, furniture pads can be placed under a tripod to create smooth tracking shots on various surfaces.
- Broom Poles as Boom Poles: A simple broom pole can hold a mic, saving you from purchasing an actual boom pole. You can secure it with screws or tape.
- Gaffer Tape: Essential for filming, gaffer tape is non-reflective (which is crucial for shooting) and won't leave residue—making it ideal for all types of filming needs.
- DIY Filter Cases: Old wallets can be repurposed to neatly store camera filters, while audio cassette cases can hold spare batteries.
- White Balance with Paper: A piece of white paper can serve as a makeshift white balance card, ensuring accurate color capture in your shots.
- Wax Paper Diffuser: Wax paper can soften harsh lighting when used to diffuse DIY lights, creating softer shadows in your scenes.
- Colorful Poster Boards as Green Screens: Instead of investing in a green screen, use any bold color poster board for basic color keying.
- Reflection with Foam Board: Foam board can reflect sunlight onto subjects, enhancing the lighting without needing expensive reflectors.
- Mobile Phone Audio Recording: Use your mobile phone in place of a professional microphone for better audio capture. Even placing it on a boom pole provides improved sound quality.
- DIY Anamorphic Lens Effect: Simple clear plastic ribbons can be attached to your lens to create stylish lens flares, mimicking the effects generally seen with expensive anamorphic lenses.
