2016 Flagship vs. 2022 Budget GPU, GeForce GTX 1080 vs. Radeon RX 6600 In a fascinating comparison video, the team at Hardware Unboxed evaluates the performance of NVIDIA's flagship GeForce GTX 1080 from 2016 against AMD's budget Radeon RX 6600 from 2022. This matchup has garnered interest from the community, particularly among gamers and tech enthusiasts considering value-for-money graphics options. The GTX 1080, initially priced at $600, is now available second-hand for around $200, while the RX 6600 retails for about $270 new. The video emphasizes the remarkable strides made in GPU technology over the last six years, ultimately portraying the RX 6600 as a more attractive option, especially for budget-conscious gamers.
Key Highlights:
- Performance Evaluation: The video tests both GPUs across 51 games at 1080p and 1440p resolutions. The RX 6600 outperformed the GTX 1080 by an average margin of approximately 20% at 1080p and 13% at 1440p. Notably, in modern titles, such as "Hitman 3" and "Far Cry 6", the RX 6600 demonstrated significant advantages, offering more playable frame rates compared to the older GTX 1080.
- Specific Game Comparisons: The results were particularly illuminating in games like "Cyberpunk 2077", where the RX 6600 delivered 44% better performance at 1080p. In contrast, the GTX 1080 still held its ground in certain titles, such as "Metro Exodus", where it performed comparably at higher resolutions. This reveals a strong legacy for Pascal architecture but hints at diminishing performance relevance in the face of newer releases.
- AMD vs NVIDIA Optimizations: A critical aspect discussed in the video is how the industry has shifted in support and optimization for various architectures. NVIDIA's older Pascal GPUs seem to be receiving less support in terms of driver optimizations for contemporary games, which may adversely affect performance compared to newer AMD cards like the RX 6600.
- Future Considerations: Viewers are advised to consider whether to invest in a second-hand GTX 1080 or to opt for the newer RX 6600. The emerging consensus is that for a moderate price difference, the RX 6600 represents a superior investment, especially as it continues to lead in newer game performance. This video serves as a valuable resource for those evaluating older hardware or considering upgrades, illustrating the significant advancements in GPU technology and the impact on gaming experiences.
