AMD Ryzen 7 5800X Review, Maybe... Don't Buy It! In the latest video from Hardware Unboxed, they dive into the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, an eight-core, sixteen-thread CPU that has drawn both interest and skepticism in the market. Despite offering strong performance in isolation, its price point of $450 puts it in a complicated position against its more powerful siblings, the Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X, as well as against Intel's competitors.
Key Highlights from the Review
- Performance Metrics:
- The Ryzen 7 5800X scored impressively in the Cinebench R20 multi-core benchmark, delivering a score of 5982, which is 22% faster than the Ryzen 3700X and on par with some Intel offerings like the 10700K.
- In gaming tests using the GeForce RTX 3090, the 5800X demonstrated significant gains with a reported 23% average uplift in performance over the previous generation.
- Value Proposition:
- The video emphasizes a critical point: while the 5800X performs well, its cost per core when compared to the 5900X and 5950X is less favorable. At $450, each core costs around $56, which is higher than its counterparts.
- The review suggests that consumers might be better off opting for the cheaper Ryzen 5 5600X or the Intel Core i7-10700K, which offers comparable performance at a lower price.
- Architecture Insights:
- The discussion includes insights into the architecture of AMD's chiplets. The 5800X's single CCD requires a premium silicon grade, which further drives its price.
- The array of performance improvements over CPU-intensive tasks shows that the Ryzen 7 5800X is capable, but the cost implications limit its desirability for many users.
- Recommendations:
- The review concludes that, considering the current pricing dynamics, the Ryzen 7 5800X may not be the best choice for most gamers and productivity users. It's recommended to consider either the more powerful 5900X for those needing additional cores or the more economical options like the 5600X.
Final Thoughts
Overall, while the Ryzen 7 5800X showcases impressive gaming and productivity benchmarks, its pricing strategy leaves potential buyers at a crossroads. The recommendation is clear: unless you are set on obtaining an AMD processor, exploring other options may yield better value for money. What are your thoughts on the Ryzen 7 5800X?
