AMD Ryzen 9 7900X Review: Needs To Be Cheaper, Just Get 7950X In a recent review video from Hardware Unboxed, the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X was put under the microscope, offering insights into its performance relative to its predecessors and competitors. The Ryzen 9 7900X is a 12-core, 24-thread processor positioned at an MSRP of $550, which places it in direct competition with Intel's Core i9-12900K. With its Zen 4 architecture, this CPU aims to satisfy both gamers and productivity enthusiasts.
Performance Overview
The video begins by comparing the 7900X to AMD's higher-end 7950X, which has been highlighted as a robust option for productivity tasks. Although the 7900X is slightly less powerful, it manages to outperform the i9-12900K in several benchmarks, displaying a strong performance in multi-threaded tasks. During gaming tests, however, it fell short in some scenarios, particularly in titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Spider-Man Remastered, where Intel's CPUs took the lead.Benchmark Highlights:
- Cinebench R23: The 7900X outpaced the i9-12900K, scoring around 7% higher in multi-core tests, which is impressive. It managed to maintain clock frequencies around 5.1 GHz under load.
- Gaming Performance: The processor produced solid results in Factorio and Watchdogs Legion, showing its strengths in single-core performance. However, in performance-sensitive games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, it achieved superior FPS, making it a reliable choice for competitive gaming.
- Value Consideration: While the 7900X presents a competitive offering in productivity contexts, when factoring in its price relative to performance, it seems less compelling than both the 7700X for gamers and the 7950X for productivity tasks.
Conclusion
The Ryzen 9 7900X is described as an impressive piece of technology that stands out in several benchmarks, especially against the i9-12900K. However, it struggles to carve a significant niche for itself within the Ryzen 7000 series lineup. Gamers seeking optimal performance may find better value in the 7700X due to its lower price and adequate performance. For those interested in productivity, the 7950X emerges as the favored choice despite the higher initial investment. The review emphasizes the need for potential price adjustments on the 7900X to enhance its market appeal, especially given the current pricing dynamics that favor its predecessors and competitors.
