VIDEO Best High-End GPU of 2020, GeForce RTX 3080 10G vs. Radeon RX 6800 XT: 2023 Revisit

Key Highlights

1. Performance Overview:
   • Historically, these GPUs have shown competitive results, with the RX 6800 XT often edging ahead in traditional rasterization benchmarks. The video initially reported that at 1080p, the RX 6800 XT was a mere 5% faster, while performances were nearly identical at higher resolutions.
   • This 2023 revisit indicates that while the RTX 3080 was generally slower in traditional gaming scenarios, it significantly outperformed the RX 6800 XT in ray tracing, showcasing its advantages in titles that heavily leverage ray-traced graphics.
2. Testing Parameters:
   • The testing used a Ryzen 9 7950X 3D CPU, disabled in a specific configuration to maximize performance. Results were based on various games, including heavy hitters like Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
3. Ray Tracing Results:
   • The RTX 3080 led substantially in ray-traced benchmarks. For example, with ray tracing enabled in Cyberpunk 2077, it produced 47% more frames at 1440p and 57% more frames at 4K compared to the RX 6800 XT, showcasing the superior game optimization for NVIDIA's architecture.
4. Price Comparison:
   • As of 2023, the RX 6800 XT presents itself as a more appealing purchase, typically retailing around $530, compared to the RTX 3080's price, which often sits north of $700. With the RX 6800 XT now below its MSRP, it offers better value for gamers not focused on ray tracing performance.
5. Conclusions:
   • For those heavily invested in ray tracing, the RTX 3080 remains the go-to option due to its superior technology and ongoing support for NVIDIA's DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). Meanwhile, the RX 6800 XT is recommended for budget-conscious gamers who do not prioritize ray tracing.
6. Market Context:
   • The video also notes how the cryptocurrency crash has affected GPU prices, with both cards initially inflated but more recently settling closer to their original MSRPs. Still, NVIDIA's pricing power means consumers often face higher costs for RTX 3080 models. Overall, this analysis serves as a great resource for gamers evaluating which GPU to purchase in a competitive market. The balance between performance and price particularly stands out in making an informed choice based on individual gaming needs.
