Building an invisible monitor... In a fascinating DIY project featured on YouTube, a creator named Matt shows viewers how to craft an ingenious invisible monitor shelf. This unique setup not only provides a functional workspace but also cleverly conceals technology, creating a clean, elegant appearance for any environment.
Overview of the Project
The premise begins with the realization that traditional monitor setups can disrupt the aesthetics of minimalist spaces. To address this, Matt introduces a system where a monitor can disappear into a shelf, effectively merging functionality with disguise. The build utilizes a combination of aluminum and hardwood to create a fine-looking shelf that incorporates a hidden monitor.Building Process
- Framework Construction:
- The project kicks off with constructing the shelf frame using a thin sheet of aluminum, bordered with real hardwood. The hardwood edges are mitered for a seamless fit.
- Special cutouts are made for shelf brackets, enhancing durability without compromising design.
- Monitor Installation:
- The centerpiece of this project is an ultra-wide monitor that is flat-fronted, making it ideal for hiding. Standard kitchen cabinet door hinges allow this monitor to hinge out from the shelf when needed.
- To mount the monitor, the creator cleverly utilizes pre-existing mounting holes for a sturdy fit, ensuring it can be easily concealed when not in use.
- Finishing Touches:
- To finalize the aesthetics, a smooth layer of hardwood veneer is applied, contributing to an elegant finish. The project suggests painting or wrapping parts of the aluminum to match the monitor's color, further minimizing visibility.
- Electrical Considerations:
- Neat cable management is emphasized throughout the project, with wires routed to maintain a clean look. The use of a power cable splitter is recommended to reduce visible cords.
Benefits of the Invisible Monitor Shelf
- Space Efficiency: With the monitor hidden, users gain valuable workspace without sacrificing functionality.
- Elegance: The design promotes a minimalist aesthetic, perfect for modern offices or home environments.
- Security: By concealing the monitor, the setup offers a degree of theft protection, disadvantageous to potential intruders who may not even realize valuable equipment is present.
- Neat cable management is emphasized throughout the project, with wires routed to maintain a clean look. The use of a power cable splitter is recommended to reduce visible cords.
