Trump's Unlikely 2020 Victory Plan: Wooing Hispanic Voters In this intriguing episode from "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," the host dives into the unconventional strategy of Donald Trump's 2020 campaign, which involved a surprising outreach to Hispanic voters in New Mexico—a state he lost by 8 points in the 2016 election. Colbert's comedic yet critical analysis highlights the absurdities and contradictions in Trump’s approach to wooing a demographic that he had notoriously alienated during his presidency.
Key Highlights
- Colbert's Opening: He kicks off the show with a sense of occasion, celebrating the 800th episode of "The Late Show." The comedy unfolds as he discusses a recent fundraising trip that Trump embarked upon in locations where he is particularly unpopular, underscoring the paradox of his campaign efforts.
- Trump's Fundraising Strategy: The segment humorously illustrates how secretive the Trump fundraising events were, with attendees reportedly being without the actual addresses—an analogy that Colbert aptly compares to following the trail of ketchup packets and Filet-O-Fish wrappers.
- Polls and Perception: Colbert speculates about the dire state of Trump's internal polling, suggesting that his need to appeal to Hispanic voters stems from a sense of desperation. He amusingly contrasts Trump's historical rhetoric about immigrants with his newfound endeavor to connect with the same group.
- Cultural References: The humor is seasoned with references to popular culture, including a jab at Trump being the "Emoji Movie" of candidates, illustrating the conflict between his populism and the content he aims to produce.
- Self-Deprecating Humor: The late-night host skillfully uses sarcasm to mock Trump’s characterization of himself as the “least racist person” in the room, juxtaposing it against the dissonance created by Trump's previous policy decisions.
