WAPO: Sessions Says If President Trump Fires Dep. AG Rosenstein He May Quit | The 11th Hour | MSNBC
In this significant segment from MSNBC's "The 11th Hour," we see a pressing issue unfold regarding the stability of the Trump administration's legal framework. The discussion centers on a report from The Washington Post stating that Attorney General Jeff Sessions expressed to the White House a willingness to resign if President Trump were to dismiss Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. This revelation comes amid intensifying internal conflicts within the administration, particularly concerning the ongoing investigations into Russian interference and the activities of Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen.
During a phone call with White House Counsel Don McGahn, Sessions conveyed that he might consider resigning if Rosenstein, who is overseeing the Russian investigation, were to be removed. This conversation reflects the growing tensions, especially given Trump's frustration with Rosenstein after the FBI raid on Cohen's office—a raid that was authorized by Rosenstein himself. The Post details that Trump has not only privately criticized Sessions but has also publicly ridiculed him, adding immense pressure to an already strained relationship.
The discussion also highlights the implications of such a potential firing. If Sessions were to resign, it could initiate a ripple effect, leading to further instability within the Department of Justice. Political analysts point out that this could escalate what many are already viewing as a constitutional crisis. The report serves as a reminder of the precarious position the Trump administration occupies in light of serious legal challenges stemming from investigations that threaten to undermine its operations.
Moreover, commentators on the show speculate how this internal discord might impact the investigations themselves, particularly with Michael Cohen at the center of scrutiny. As the investigation progresses, there are fears that Cohen might cooperate with federal prosecutors, further complicating Trump's legal landscape.
Overall, this segment underscores a tumultuous time for the Trump administration, with the potential for severe repercussions if Sessions and Rosenstein were to part ways with the administration. The rhetoric surrounding this topic is charged, reflecting the seriousness of the issues at hand.
