A 16-year-old girl jumped or fell off the Golden Gate Bridge on Sunday and survived, San Francisco Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The girl was in the water for 20 minutes after the first call to dispatchers and was found conscious and responsive. She was transported to Marin General Hospital.

It's not known what led to the girl's drop. But it's extremely unusual to survive the fall, including a March incident when a 17-year-old boy from Windsor jumped as an apparent boast and also survived.

San Francisco fire dispatchers got their first call about the girl at 10:53 a.m. The U.S. Coast Guard found her at 11:13 a.m., said Jeremy Pichette.

The teen was found "conscious and responsive" beneath the suspension bridge at about 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, said U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Levi Read.

She was pulled out of the water into a Coast Guard boat and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of her injuries was unclear.

"Normally when we're talking about a jumper from the Golden Gate Bridge, the numbers show it's not a high probability that they're going to survive," Read said.

The bridge's roadway surface at mid-span is about 270 feet above the water.

It was not immediately clear if the girl, who was not identified, jumped or fell from the bridge, or which part of the bridge she dropped from.
