PC Gamer is running an article which I found extremely interesting, almost shocking in some places. Well worth a read and I think perhaps you will be surprised about some of these expensive headsets and what's actually in them, I certainly was:

When we set out last month to take on headsets, we wanted to do it in way that was more than your typical subjective user experience test. We wanted to remove good portion of the human aspect. This might seem counterintuitive considering an audio experience is highly subjective, but the fact is manufacturers use a great deal of engineering equipment to design and develop headsets and headphones.

That’s why we ended up getting ourselves a $50,000 testing platform.

I've tried a few of these and I'm not sure I agree with their numbers :p

For instance right now I'm using a Turtle Beach Stealth 450... they have it ranked:

- Design: closed-back
- Interface: analog
- Audio: 5/10
- Microphone clarity: 9/10
- Comfort: 3.5/10
- Detachable cable: yes
- Extras: in-line volume/mic control
- Price: $130

Real Stats (as found by me ;)
Interface: Digital 7.1ch surround, analog only when using mobile cable to listen to music through that interface.
Audio: 7/10
Microphone Clarity: 9/10
Comfort: 7/10
Extras: In-line volume/mic control and preset button for functions like vocal boost, bass boost, etc.
Price: $109
