Best Buy has published its 2026 back-to-school shopping guide, putting Microsoft’s 12-inch Surface Pro Copilot+ PC alongside Apple’s MacBook Neo, headphones, dorm-room gear and wearables in a broad college-tech promotion.
The retailer’s July 20 roundup is a sales guide rather than a product announcement, but the Surface Pro is the clearest Windows-focused pick. Best Buy is highlighting the Snapdragon X Plus model with a 12-inch touchscreen, 16GB of memory and 256GB of UFS storage. The listed configuration is sold as “device only,” meaning students who want a laptop-style setup should budget separately for a keyboard and, depending on their workflow, a pen.

Best Buy’s study-tools selections also include the MacBook Neo, which its product listing identifies as a 13-inch A18 Pro-based Mac with 8GB of memory and 256GB of SSD storage. The retailer lists the entry model at $699, compared with $949.99 for the featured Surface Pro configuration.
That comparison is not quite apples-to-apples. The Surface has twice the memory and a touch display with pen support, while the MacBook is a conventional clamshell with an SSD. But it illustrates the decision students will face this fall: lower-cost macOS hardware versus an ARM Windows tablet that can serve as both a note-taking slate and a portable PC.
Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC branding signals that the Surface meets the company’s newer AI-PC hardware requirements. For students, the more immediate benefits remain the familiar ones: Windows application compatibility, a compact detachable design, touchscreen inking and 16GB of RAM for multitasking. Buyers should still check that required course software supports Windows on Arm before committing, particularly for specialist engineering, scientific or legacy desktop applications.

The rest is conventional back-to-school retail

The guide also pitches Bose noise-cancelling headphones, a Ninja single-serve coffee maker, Nintendo’s Switch 2, a 32-inch Samsung smart TV, an Oura Ring 5, Apple Watch SE 3 and Meta AI glasses. Best Buy says its stores and online back-to-school hub can provide deal information and advice from its Blue Shirt sales staff.
There are no student-specific discounts, availability guarantees or promotion end dates in the corporate post itself. Retail listings can vary by region and may change quickly, especially during seasonal promotions.
For Windows buyers, the practical point is simple: the Surface Pro deserves a closer look if pen input and tablet use matter, but factor in the keyboard, accessories and software compatibility before treating its sticker price as the full cost.
