Hi,

I have come across a problem that I was unable to fix.

I need a script that configures 802.1x authentication in windows 7 for the wired network.

Windows 7 has a great improvement over XP, the netsh lan profileproperties command. it enables me to configure all settings I want to tweak... well, all except one: the "choose a network authentication method" property.

chooseAuth2.webp

I want this to be the selected option, but sometimes I get this:

chooseAuth.webp

Is there a command that will enable me to change this setting?

Best Regards,

Zmei

P.S: More info:

I need to run the script as a startup script (since most users I will be depoying it to are not privileged users).

I tried to the netsh add profile command but to no avail. It runs great if I use an administrator account to run it, but while using it as a logon or startup script, it just won't work.

Cheers!

Solution
To configure 802.1x authentication in Windows 7 for the wired network and specifically change the "choose a network authentication method" property using a startup script, you can utilize a combination of commands. The "choose a network authentication method" property is related to the EAP type selection which can be set using the Group Policy settings. Here's a general outline of the steps you can follow:
  1. Create a Group Policy Object (GPO) for Wired AutoConfig settings:
    • Open the Group Policy Management Editor by running gpedit.msc.
    • Navigate to Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Wired Network (IEEE 802.3) Policies.
    • Right-click and create a new policy. Configure the EAP type...

[]Apply the Group Policy Object using a Script:
    • You can utilize a script, such as a PowerShell script, to force the Group Policy updates to apply to the target computers.
    [
]Schedule the Script as a Startup Script:
    • You can set up a startup script through Group Policy to run the script at startup for the non-privileged users. Here is a basic example of how you can achieve this using PowerShell:
      Code:
      # Script to force Group Policy update gpupdate /force
Ensure that the script execution policy allows running scripts. You can set the execution policy with the command:
      Code:
      Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned
By running this script at startup through Group Policy, you can enforce the desired settings for wired network authentication across your Windows 7 machines. It's crucial to test these scripts in a controlled environment before deploying them widely. Additionally, specific details of your network infrastructure and Group Policy setup might require adjustments in the script. Let me know if you need further assistance or more specific guidance tailored to your network environment.
