The fix is AC500 V3 firmware 3.9.0 HF1, but the advisory’s wording creates an awkward wrinkle because one affected listing also names 3.9.0_HF1 while the remediation text says 3.9.0 HF1 corrects the problem. The practical message for operators is still clear: verify the exact firmware build from ABB’s library and treat exposed AC500 V3 nodes as high-priority industrial assets until patched or isolated. This is not just another OpenSSL-adjacent bug; it is a reminder that cryptographic plumbing in industrial controllers can become a pre-authentication attack surface.

A Crypto Parser Becomes the Front Door​

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2025-15467, sits in the parsing of CMS AuthEnvelopedData structures using AEAD ciphers such as AES-GCM. In plain terms, a maliciously shaped cryptographic message can include an oversized initialization vector, and the device copies that value into a fixed-size stack buffer without first checking whether it fits.
That is the kind of bug security engineers dread because it happens before authentication or tag verification. The advisory explicitly says no valid key material is required to trigger the overflow. In other words, the attacker does not need to defeat the cryptography; the attacker only needs to reach the code that tries to parse the cryptographic wrapper.
ABB and CISA rate the issue at CVSS 3.1 score 9.8, the familiar “critical” ceiling for a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw with potential confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. That score should not be read as a guarantee of remote code execution on every deployment. It should be read as a warning that the vulnerable primitive is serious enough to demand urgent attention before exploit chains, proof-of-concept code, or environment-specific details catch up.

The Most Dangerous Bugs Often Hide in the Boring Layer​

The Firmware Wording Deserves a Second Look​

The advisory’s remediation text says the problem is corrected in AC500 V3 firmware version 3.9.0 HF1 and recommends applying the update at the earliest convenience. Yet the supplied affected-products summary also lists 3.9.0_HF1 among affected versions. That could be a formatting inconsistency, a distinction between similarly named builds, or an advisory conversion artifact.
Operators should not try to resolve that ambiguity by interpretation alone. The safe path is to obtain the current firmware package directly from ABB’s official library, compare the exact build identifiers, and confirm the advisory revision against ABB PSIRT documentation before declaring a controller remediated.

CISA’s standard recommendations are familiar: minimize network exposure, keep control systems off the internet, place them behind firewalls, isolate them from business networks, and use secure remote access such as updated VPNs where remote access is unavoidable. The language is boilerplate because the failure mode is common. Segmentation is supposed to make a parser bug reachable only to a small, controlled population of systems.
The trouble is that modern OT networks are rarely as isolated as their diagrams suggest. The advisory is careful: exploitability to remote code execution depends on platform and toolchain mitigations. Stack protections, memory layout, compiler hardening, watchdog behavior, and firmware architecture can all influence whether a write primitive becomes a crash or a controlled execution path. But from an operator’s perspective, the difference may be less comforting than it sounds.
A denial-of-service condition against a controller can interrupt production, trigger fail-safe behavior, require manual recovery, or force a process into an abnormal state. In some plants, “availability” is not just one leg of the CIA triad; it is the reason the system exists. Publicly disclosed, unauthenticated parsing bugs have a way of attracting reverse engineers, especially when the affected product sits in critical infrastructure sectors.
