The City of Brownsville has extended the application deadline for its "Smart City: Back to School Digital Skills Workshop and Laptop Giveaway," aiming to equip students with essential technology and skills for the upcoming academic year. This initiative underscores the city's commitment to digital inclusion and educational advancement.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Residency within the City of Brownsville
  • Enrollment in a Brownsville public school
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • One laptop per family
  • Mandatory attendance at the workshop to receive the laptop
Interested families must submit their applications by July 15, 2025. Applications can be completed online at GW 20/20 Registration Portal - Quickbase Error.
During the workshop, the city's IT Department will provide training on various topics, including email usage and safety, phone security, and banking security. A special presentation on "Microsoft Copilot" will also be featured, highlighting its practical applications for students and families.
Mayor John Cowen Jr. emphasized the importance of technology in education, noting the city's partnership with Omni Fiber to install fiber optic internet service across Brownsville. City Manager Helen Ramirez highlighted the initiative as an investment in the youth and a reinforcement of the city's commitment to digital advancement.
