When I look at hard drive properties (My Computer) C: disk space is correct but D: and E: show 100% as free even though there are many files on the disk that show up if you open the drive. Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit ASUS BIOS Ver 1701

Solution
When you encounter a situation where the hard drive properties show 100% free on drives D: and E: in "My Computer," yet files are visible when you access the drives, it could be due to various reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow to address this issue:

1. Refresh the Explorer Window

Sometimes, the file system can be slow to update, causing discrepancies in what is shown in File Explorer. Try refreshing the window by pressing F5 or clicking the refresh icon.

2. Check Hidden Files

Make sure that hidden files are set to be visible in Windows Explorer. To display hidden files:
  • Open Windows Explorer
  • Go to the "View" tab on the menu bar
  • Check the box for "Hidden items"

Verify the status of the drives in Disk Management:
  • Right-click on "Computer" or "This PC"
  • Select "Manage"
  • Go to "Disk Management"
  • Check if the drives are properly recognized and have the correct partitions

4. Run Disk Cleanup

Running Disk Cleanup can help clear unnecessary files and update the disk space information:
  • Press the Windows key + R to open the "Run" dialog
  • Type "cleanmgr" and press Enter
  • Select the drive (D: or E:) and run the cleanup process

5. Check for Disk Errors

Check for disk errors using the built-in Windows disk checking tool:
  • Open a command prompt with administrative privileges
  • Run the command: chkdsk D: /f (replace D: with the drive letter)
  • Follow the on-screen instructions

6. Update Drivers and BIOS

Ensure that your system drivers, including the storage controller driver, are up to date. Also, consider updating your BIOS to the latest version to address any compatibility issues.

7. Scan for Malware

Perform a full system scan using an updated antivirus program to rule out any malware causing the discrepancy in free space display.

8. Check BIOS Settings

Ensure that there are no settings in the BIOS that could affect how the drives are recognized or accessed. By following these steps, you can address the issue of incorrect free space display on drives D: and E: in Windows 7 Ultimate. If the problem persists, further troubleshooting or professional assistance may be required.
