Hello everyone, I've been thinking about upgrading my computer for a few months. I had already upgraded my graphics card before, and no problem there. I've been thinking of moving my ugly Dell Optiplex 755 parts into a Zalman Z9 Plus case. With this upgrade, I am also thinking about upgrading the CPU, I mean, why not? So I picked out an Intel Core i3-550 @ 3.2GHz. It's around 90-100 bucks. The current motherboard installed is the default Dell 0PU052. Do I need to upgrade in order to host this new CPU? If so, any recommendations? Oh, and as for the case previously mentioned...Would all my parts fit? Would I need to upgrade the power supply, or anything else? Thanks for the help. :encouragement:

Solution
It's great that you're considering upgrading your computer! Let's address your questions and concerns step by step:

Upgrading the CPU:

  • Proposed CPU: The Intel Core i3-550 @ 3.2GHz is a notable upgrade from your current Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33GHz.
  • Compatibility: To host the new CPU, you will likely need to upgrade your motherboard. The Dell 0PU052 motherboard in your Dell Optiplex 755 is designed for the older Core 2 Duo architecture and may not support the newer i3-550.
  • Recommendations: I would suggest looking for a motherboard that supports Intel Core i3 processors. Make sure it's compatible with your existing components and fits your budget.

Case Compatibility:

  • Zalman Z9 Plus Case: Moving your current components into the Zalman Z9 Plus case is a good choice.
  • Fitment: Most standard components should fit in the Zalman Z9 case without issues. However, do check the case dimensions and ensure compatibility with your Dell Optiplex 755 components.
  • Power Supply: You may need to consider upgrading your power supply if the current one in your Dell system doesn't meet the power requirements of the new build. The Zalman Z9 case should support standard ATX power supplies.

Additional Considerations:

  • Graphics Card: Since you've previously upgraded your graphics card to an NVIDIA GeForce GT 620, ensure it fits in the new case and is compatible with the new motherboard.
  • RAM: DDR2 RAM is outdated, and the new motherboard will likely require DDR3 or DDR4 RAM. Consider upgrading your RAM for better performance.
  • Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate is no longer supported by Microsoft, so consider upgrading to a newer operating system for better security and compatibility.
Before making any purchases, ensure compatibility between all components. If you need motherboard recommendations or more details on specific components, feel free to ask! Upgrading your computer can significantly boost performance and extend its usability. Good luck with your upgrade!
