Hi,
i have a Dell laptop with a Dell dock. I have three monitors connected to the dock.
On my primary monitor i have organized my icons in a certain specific manner. The problem is that when i remove my laptop from the dock and then reconnect it to the dock the icons on my primary display are all messed up and randomly placed to the right hand side of the screen.
How to make Windows 7 Professional, Service pack 1 remember my icon placement?
To address the issue of desktop icons being rearranged and misplaced upon reconnecting your Dell laptop to the docking station, follow these steps to help Windows remember your icon layout:
Solution 1: Use DesktopOK Software
Download and install DesktopOK.
Arrange your icons as desired on your primary monitor.
Run DesktopOK and save the icon layout by clicking the "Save" button in the software.
After disconnection and reconnection to the dock, restore the icon layout using DesktopOK's "Restore" function.
Solution 2: Change Desktop Icon Settings
Right-click on your desktop and go to "View."
Ensure "Auto arrange icons" and "Align icons to grid" are unchecked.

Arrange the icons manually.
Upon reconnection to the dock, check if the icons retain their positions.
Solution 3: Registry Edit
Press Windows Key + R, type regedit, and hit Enter to open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop.
Right-click on "Desktop" and choose "New" > "DWORD (32-bit) Value."
Name the new DWORD as NoSaveSettings, and set its value data to 0.
Exit the Registry Editor and restart your computer to apply the changes. These steps should help Windows remember your desktop icon layout, even when reconnecting your laptop to the docking station. This way, you can maintain your preferred desktop icon arrangement without the need for manual reorganization each time.
