The Marin Humane Society is investigating allegations that a dog was fatally poisoned by alcohol and marijuana during an unsupervised juvenile party in Mill Valley.
Tamalpais High School contacted authorities this week after picking up campus rumors about the dog's death at a large party in the Tamalpais Valley neighborhood.
An administrator told the humane society that no parents were present during the party, and that a pug was apparently given liquor in its water bowl, said Carrie Harrington, a spokeswoman for the animal agency.
Harrington also said the pug was allegedly "hot-boxed" -- confined in a space filled with marijuana smoke.
The dead dog, a 15-year-old female named Coal, was taken by family members to a veterinary clinic. The humane society is awaiting the results of a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
"We won't know for sure for a couple of weeks," Harrington said.
The humane society is still seeking witnesses to interview, and anyone with information is encouraged to call 506-6209. If the allegations are confirmed, the suspects could face felony animal abuse charges.
"We think it's a great example that the school took a proactive stance and contacted authorities," Harrington said. "We do consider this a serious crime."
