I have a 320gb hard drive, and just installed Windows 7 Professional to what I thought was a clean install, but to my suprise I still have the same amount of free space as I did with Vista. I booted from CD and did a custom install which I thought would clear off everything. I'm not sure the problem, I don't have any of the previous files, yet I don't have any of the space either. A little insight?
Thanks for any thoughts.

When upgrading to a new operating system, like Windows 7 Professional in your case, it's essential to ensure that you correctly perform a clean installation to avoid carrying over unnecessary files that might be taking up space on your hard drive. Here are a few steps and considerations to help you troubleshoot the issue of missing disk space after installing Windows 7 Professional: 1. Check System Files and Folders: - Windows creates some system files and backup folders during installation that might consume space. Check for folders like Windows.old or any backup folders that might have been created during the installation. 2. Disk Cleanup: - Run the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to free up space by removing temporary files...

Check System Files and Folders: - Windows creates some system files and backup folders during installation that might consume space. Check for folders like Windows.old or any backup folders that might have been created during the installation. 2. Disk Cleanup: - Run the built-in Disk Cleanup tool to free up space by removing temporary files, system files, and other unnecessary items. This might help in reclaiming some of the lost disk space. 3. Hidden Files and Folders: - Enable the option to view hidden files and folders in Windows Explorer. Sometimes, system files or folders are hidden and can take up significant space. 4. Check for Windows Updates: - After a new installation, Windows might download and store updates that can consume space. Check for pending updates and install them. 5. Third-Party Disk Cleanup Tools: - Use third-party disk cleanup tools like CCleaner to scan for and remove unnecessary files that might be taking up space on your hard drive. 6. Check Disk Space Allocation: - Verify the disk space allocation during the installation process. Ensure that the entire disk space is allocated to the new Windows 7 installation and nothing is left unallocated or reserved. 7. Recycle Bin: - Empty the Recycle Bin to ensure that deleted files are not taking up space unnecessarily. 8. Recovery Partition: - Some systems come with a recovery partition that might not be removed during the installation process. Check for any recovery partitions and see if they are consuming space. By following these steps, you should be able to identify and potentially recover the missing disk space after installing Windows 7 Professional. If the issue persists, consider using disk management tools to analyze the disk space allocation and identify any discrepancies.
