Windows 7 folder size display

I am attempting to do what I thought should be a simple Windows & function: to display the size of a folder just as it does individual file size. Surely this is possible in Windows 7???

I have searched for an answer to no avail.

The folder size should be able to be displayed before it is opened!!

I think the only way is to right click and go to properties or use an open source explorer replacement like : Explorer++ - A small and fast file manager for Windows
