Maybe he’s really looking forward to life as a frog or perhaps he just likes posing for the camera – but this tadpole obviously has a reason to smile in a photo taken by photographer David Spears.

The 1cm (0.4in) tadpole was captured with a ‘grin’ on his face after being placed under a £90,000 electron microscope by Mr Spears.

Displaying the features which are normally invisible to the naked eye, the tadpole – soon to grow into a frog – was taken from Mr Spears’ garden pond before being photographed.

‘All of him – actually, it could be a him or a her – is in focus and you can see clearly that he appears to be smiling,’ said the 65-year-old former zoologist from Taunton, Somerset.

‘Although what appears to be his eyes are actually his nostrils as his eyes are much further back on his head.’
