COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Michigan (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) -- A group of Michigan teens celebrating that Harold Camping’s “Rapture” prediction was wrong jumped off a bridge late Saturday afternoon; 17-year-old Anthony Thompson was caught in the current, is missing, and is presumed to have drowned.
Camping predicted the "Rapture" would take place Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 6 p.m. EST. When it didn't happen, a group of lively teens decided to head to the river and jump off a bridge to celebrate.
The friends had gone to Merrill Park and jumped off the east side of the bridge at about 6:25 p.m.
What started as a celebration quickly turned to tragedy. The group of friends watched in terror as Anthony Thompson, who didn’t know how to swim and who was warned by a friend not to jump, was overwhelmed by the water.
