A South-African man and his grandson spent two hours hiding from a hippo in a tree, only to find that all the animal wanted was an apple.

The 52-year-old was canoeing with his seven-year-old grandson in the Vaal River to the north-west of Johannesburg when they discovered they were being chased by a large bull hippo.

After crossing the river, the pair jumped out of their craft and made for the nearest tree, climbing up into the canopy to escape the beast, clapping and shouting in a bid to scare it away.

However, rather than give up and move on, the hippo stayed near the tree, nudging the canoe.

The grandfather called for help, but when paramedics arrived they were unable to reach the stranded pair.
