With regard to Win7 setup for an SSD.
How to check the status of Superfetch/ReadyBoost/ Prefetch? I see in properties of my 2 SSDs under "policies" tab a setup for "Write -caching policy". Is this relevant?

Solution
When setting up Windows 7 for an SSD, it's essential to ensure that certain features like Superfetch, ReadyBoost, and Prefetch are optimized for your SSD. Here's how you can check the status of these features and understand the relevance of the "Write-caching policy" under the "policies" tab for your SSDs:

Checking the Status of Superfetch/ReadyBoost/Prefetch:

  1. Superfetch:
    • Superfetch is a Windows feature that helps speed up the boot process and application launching by pre-loading frequently used applications into memory.
    • To check the status of Superfetch:
      • Open the "Services" management console by pressing Win + R, then typing services.msc and hitting Enter.

      • Look for the service named "Superfetch" in the list of services. The status should indicate whether it is running or stopped.
    []ReadyBoost:
    • ReadyBoost is a feature that enables you to use removable storage devices like USB drives as additional memory for your system.
    • To check if ReadyBoost is enabled:
      • Right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties.
      • Go to the ReadyBoost tab to see if ReadyBoost is enabled for the drive.

    ]Prefetch:
    • Prefetch is a feature that preloads frequently accessed data and instructions into memory for faster startup of applications.
    • To check the status of Prefetch:
      • Open regedit by pressing Win + R and typing regedit.
      • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters.
      • Look at the EnablePrefetcher and Enable Superfetch values. A value of "3" means both features are enabled.

        Write-Caching Policy:

        • The Write-caching policy under the policies tab for your SSD is relevant for optimizing how Windows handles write operations to your SSD.
        • Write-caching is a feature that improves disk performance by collecting write commands in a cache before writing them to the disk.
        • To configure the write-caching policy for your SSD:
        1. Right-click on the SSD drive in Windows Explorer.
        2. Select Properties and go to the Hardware tab.
        3. Select your SSD drive and click Properties.
        4. In the Policies tab, you might see options like Enable write caching on the device and Enable write caching in Windows.
        5. Enabling these options can optimize performance, but it's important to safely eject your device to prevent data loss. By checking and adjusting these settings, you can optimize your Windows 7 setup for your SSD for better performance and longevity.
